It's pouring and I've had the sick sinus headache from hell again today, just short of the vertigo headache. Nauseous headache bordering on a migraine. It's finally dissipated a little bit. Although dinner was just broth.

So this will be short.

Watched TV - decided on a whim, and out of boredom to try a 7 day trial of Apple TV. It's actually the cheapest of the streaming services at $4.99 a month.

So saw...

* Wolfwalkers (the animated Irish film) - highly recommend, although I liked "Soul" better (screw the critics - Soul was the more innovative film and story - I've seen the Wolfwalker storyline before and animation style - even though I loved Wolfwalkers and found the animation to be charming.) Its a story about people who have the ability to be humans while awake and wolves while asleep. An innovative take on the werewolf tale, and based on an Irish Folk Tale. Did make me dislike nasty humans and soliders.

*Schigmadoon -is a parody of musicals, specifically old school 1950s and 40s musicals, such as Rodgers & Hammerstein, and Brigadoon. Basically the musicals I saw on television and at a Repertory Theater in my youth, way back in the 1970s and early 80s. It features a couple who has been living together for three years, after meeting at the hospital vending machine. They are having issues - so they go to relationship counseling and go camping for "togetherness". It's pouring. A bridge appears. They cross it and they are in Shigmadoon - a town with fake plants, and is right out of a 1950s Hollywood musical. Also they can't leave until they find their one true love - which apparently isn't each other.

It's amusing. Although what's amusing is the sarcastic one-liners, the musical numbers and parody are...well okay, kind of reminiscent of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend - except I liked those better. Also, in regards to the couple, the woman loves old musicals, while the man hates them.

* Central Park - while I could get into the musical numbers, the set up is kind of corny (it's about the park ranger of Central Park and his family, and a troubadoor who wanders about telling their story without their knowledge). The animation - I'm not a fan of - it's the same style as the Simpsons, Rick & Morty, etc - so a cartoon. Not a fan of cartoon animation. Never have been. It's just not something I like - kind of how some people don't like anime or musicals, I guess?

* The Morning Show - I enjoyed this more than I expected. The set up is that a male morning show anchor (Steve Carrol whose made a career out of playing assholes) gets fired for sexual harassment - leaving his co-host (Jennifer Anniston) high and dry, and the show hunting his replacement. Enter a brass young reporter (Reese Witherspoon - who is likable for a change, she wasn't in the last two television shows I saw her in) from a conservative local news outlet, whose rant at a coal mine protest in West Virginia goes viral. She got fired from the outlet, but the morning show producers grabbed her for an interview with the female co-host of the show - to boost ratings. What they see impresses the head producer (Billy Crudup) so much - they end up hiring her as the co-host much to the existing morning show anchor's (Jennifer Anniston) considerable chagrin.

It's kind of funny in places, and entertaining in others. I was surprised by it. At any rate it held my attention. Also it's clearly a commentary on Good Morning America - Matt Lauher got fired for the same reasons Steve Carrol's character does.

Also want to try "Lisey's Story", "Mr. Corman" and finish Ted Lasso before trial ends. And "Dickenson".

Difficulty with Apple TV App is it takes longer to load, has glitches, and the sound went out twice. So we'll see.

Somewhat depressed today - mainly due to the headache, and worrying about my parents. Mother misses my father. Who is still very much present - if slightly deluded. Today he told her that he was working on writing a situation comedy and a history professor and a woman who was a scientist or teacher, similar to "As Time Goes By", except he wasn't a very good history professor. He had a team that he was working with.

Me: Well, at least he's entertaining himself.
Mother: More than I am.

She's terrified she won't be able to walk or drive again. And worried she's doing the wrong thing with the hip replacement surgery. Then upset that she burdens me with it. Also she thinks she needs her eye-sight checked, since maybe her glasses are giving her headaches.

This situation is far from ideal. And what's so painful - is all I can do is listen. I feel completely and utterly useless. Angry at myself and the world around me, and the situation. The desire to lash out - is overwhelming at times, so I've pulled back and don't correspond much outside of this space - where I write to stay sane. Messages in a bottle as it were, with some sense of anonymity.

Bro is doing much better - he was able to visit at least. And he's furious about the situation as well. Currently he's worried about his very socially active 17 year old, who went to a birthday party at a campground today with a friend. She decided to spend the night - then get up around 9 the next morning to race into the city for a dental appointment and wander about the city with her friend. Niece doesn't seem to have any anxiety or worries about the pandemic whatsoever. She's vaccinated so figures she'll be fine. She did get the head-cold that had gone around her age group. And Bro has friends coming up this coming weekend. He's had people visit him just about every weekend this summer - between niece's friends, his and sisinlaw's and of course me.

I feel like a hermit and a work-a-holic in comparison. Although I did successfully talk a consultant into helping crazy org with a safety hazard.
My good deed, considering I didn't want to do it on my end, and it would be easier for me if they said no. Also I'll get no acknowledgement or support for it - since the conservation was off the record. I'll let my boss take the credit. Most good deeds, mine at any rate, aren't seen - no one really knows about them - except me - and for some reason that's more than enough.

Ah, the head-ache is gone. When they leave - I feel so relieved and grateful.

Mother: Do you think it might be COVID? You don't usually vomit.
Me: No that happens at times. But I've not had a headache in over a month. Not sure what brought it on. It did go away though - with medication, and cleared. If COVID, it wouldn't have.

I watched the closing ceremony of the Olympics - and it gave me hope. The Paris portion was incredibly moving, and inspiring. Also I chose to watch some of the events this week and found them to be oddly comforting in their normalcy. Showing that life goes on, that we can join together peacefully, celebrate sports and joyful activity and safely for the most part.

It was hard for them to pull it off. Japan has over 1 million cases right now. But they did it, and it makes me hopeful. Some good news. Not the superficial stuff, something real. I think.

Longer than expected, mainly because the headache has disappeared thankfully.

I love watching sport - so unpredictable. And bitching about the stupid commentators provides a distraction. Did you see Tamberi and Bashir?

Ugh, I forgot about the Olympics closing ceremony (much like I forgot about the opening one).

I can't believe there's no fic about them on AO3! Not that I read RPF, but I thought it would have exploded after that!

That was indeed wonderful, thanks for the link! I remember that the part I liked best of the Brasilian closing ceremonies was Japan's portion of it. It was so much fun and so fannish, and made me look forward to seeing their opening. How sad it is to think of what became of these, whereas France is more likely to be able to hold more normal ceremonies...although the differences we're going to face due to climate change will continue to accelerate.
