To critique or not critique therein lies the question..

There was a minor kerfuffle on Soap Twitter today, which I've also seen occur in various other fandoms over the years and social media platforms (happened all the time in the Buffy/Angel/Whedon fandom)...concerning whether we should "critique" the writing, acting, costumes, sets, etc of our favorite soap, television show, or film franchise. (Buffy fans got upset whenever I critiqued anything Buffy related - or anything Angel related, or Whedon related. Always said the same things too.)

Anyhow, A "tweeter" called CoastalWriter, who claims to have watched the soap since 1969 (they always tell you that they've watched it for years), stated that Soap Twitter should stop critiquing the writers, and the fashion decisions of the wardrobe department. (This was amusing actually - apparently people were upset that various fans were critiquing one actress/character's decision to wear nothing but "blazers" everywhere she went to cover up a pregnancy and post pregnancy weight gain. She even wore the blazer in the steam room - so fans ruthlessly called her Blazer Lynn.) They wanted us to just talk about the show. How dare we criticize a soap opera. (Sound familiar? It should. I've yet to see a fandom not get into a fight about this. People are terribly consistent in this regard.)

It did not end at all well for Coastal Writer, needless to say. I'm sure you can imagine the fight, without me providing it.

It's a particular pet peeve of mine - folks telling me how to enjoy a television show, book, movie, music, etc. I like to analyze things, and I'm critical of the things I love. Also I like to figure out why things work for me and why they don't - it helps me with my own writing and story telling. I can learn from other folks mistakes and figure out what to borrow and what to ignore.

Also, art is about interaction. That's the whole point - to interact with it. If you can't take negative criticism - you shouldn't be creating art.
It comes with the territory. For every person who loves what you've created, there's about ten or twenty who didn't. And I'm always curious as to why they didn't like something or it doesn't appeal. It's not personal - it just is, and it builds character to get criticism. Also criticism tells us a great deal about others - we learn things about each other, tastes, likes, interests, views. It pays to be curious, I think.

That's not to say I enjoy receiving criticism nor am I requesting it. (This is not an invitation to critique all my journal entries. Do that, and I reserve the right to bop you on the head, figuratively speaking.)

Twitter: "Without religion, racism and politics what would people fight about?"
Me: Soap operas?

Also, as I was recently reminded by a friend, "Spike".

Honestly, humans can argue about the color of paint.

Twitter: "Calling on all levels of government to ban the flying of confederate flags in Canada. It's not enough to say "hate does not belong here". Time for action!"
ME: Okay, why is Canada flying Confederate Flags? Do they even know what the damn flags stand for? Canada? Really? Canada???

Twitter is still trying to figure out how to handle Elon Musk. I don't think Musk buying Twitter matters all that much - unless you plan on talking about politics all the time, and even then - I doubt he cares.
Musk cares about Musk.

Musk tweet today: Next I'm going to buy Cocoa Cola and put the cocaine back in it.

Me: And most likely get arrested...wait, please go do that.

Got a lot done tonight. Laundry. Spoke to mother twice. Shower. Put Laundry away. Took out the trash.

I need to clean my bathroom. I also need to do something about my hair. It looks scraggly. Interesting color though.

Mother: Contact your sister-in-law, she's doing something that's restoring the natural color to her hair and adding volume. It appears to be working.
Me: Uh, Niece said it was complicated, took forever, and it would be cheaper and easier to just die it.
Mother: Your brother said it appeared to be working nicely.

I'm afraid of my sister-in-law. So not sure about doing that.

Mother reminded me that tomorrow is my brother's birthday. He turns fifty-two. He's three years younger than I am. He told the ladies in his house - that all he wants tomorrow is for everyone to be nice to him.

Me: Aren't they nice to him?
Mother: Apparently not always.

Twitter: Instead of 8K television sets and self-driving cars, lets have four day work weeks and rent control!
ME: Eh, agree, except I want self-driving cars too!

Self-driving cars would solve so many of my issues. I could buy one and literally go anywhere.

Time to sign off and hopefully go to bed. Bye now.

Or the color of a dress online...

I never understood the 'don't criticize anything' mentality. I don't like it when they go directly at the writers, or worst, the cast, when they have an issue with something minor, but there is nothing in the world that is universally beloved.

It is already telling when states that had nothing do with with the Civil War or the South fly confederate flags but Canada? Really? I suppose I shouldn't be surprised at anything anymore. :\

Musk tweet today: Next I'm going to buy Cocoa Cola and put the cocaine back in it.
The fact that he actually tweeted that is proof that he just wants to provoke people, if it wasn't clear already.

It's so depressing, isn't it? Wherever two or more people are gathered together, even if they have a single aim ...
