I talked to my mother about it - to see if she remembered more - but all she knew for certain was that "phonics" was the new thing - and they were pushing it in school when I was in elementary in the 1970s. Also, she couldn't get a diagnosis for me - back then. The psychologist who first assessed me - didn't have a clue (this was in 1974). My mother was also dyslexic, as is my brother, Aunt, and grandfather. But none of us knew or were diagnosed.
The other thing they pushed was new math - which lost me completely. I had to teach myself math.
