What you say about romance is interesting because I definitely read romance that features women who are independent, aren't tiny, etc. Maybe it has to do with the authors you're reading more than that it doesn't exist at all? In Esme's case in The Bride Test there are important cultural factors which limit her actions and lead to her desire to have someone else save her. You can't discount an entire life of being an outcast.
