Still watching Great British Bake Off...they are attempting to make smores..except the British version of smores apparently is two digestive biscuits, with chocolate ganach (glaze), and a big Marshmellow between them.

No. No. No. I'm laughing at them.

This is a s'more:



It's two graham crackers, with a hershey bar, and a roasted marshmallow between them. Not digestive biscuits (whatever that is - ETA: looked it up, it's not a graham cracker - Digestive Biscuit), chocolate ganache and baked marshmallow.

They really need to stick to British Baking - they suck when they try American or countries outside of Europe - cuisine.

Ironically the messy ones are smores. They shouldn't be pretty. Marshmellows should be melted, not firm. And the chocolate is a candy bar - it's not supposed to be pretty.


Took today off - because tomorrow is a election day (which my union and by association crazy org gets off). Then I found out over the weekend that my cousin's funeral is Friday. I can't go. I get take any more time off work at the moment. Even if I could reschedule my Thanksgiving vacation time to go - I'd be more trouble than I'm worth, I can't drive, and I'd be dependent on someone else taking me everywhere. I can't reschedule it though - I'm needed at work the next few days.

Also, it was short notice - and unlike what we did with my Dad, designed to ensure few attendees. If you give short notice for a big event to family and friends who live across the country - you don't want them all to attend or feel the need to.

I'm glad I took today off - I wasn't feeling well. So did nothing but watch television and relax. A combination of bad IBS (gerd, diarrhea, upset stomach and sinus headache, and sigh, hot flashes). I've been having three-four at night, and a few during the day. Today I've had about five or six. Last night, it was hot flash, wake up, get cold pack, pee, sleep, hot flash, get new cold pack, pee, sleep, hot flash, sweat, pull off covers, drink water, sleep, then freezing, throw on covers and sleep.

I don't know if this is menopause or something else. I was having them prior to the booster shot, so it's not the vaccine. It may be diabetic related? I do not know. Will mention them to doctor tomorrow.



Also caught up on Miss Scarlet and the Duke - which is a fun little mystery series on PBS, via BBC. The Duke is hot, and I like Miss Scarlet.

And..Interview with a Vampire on AMC, which is a lot better than the film adaptation. I love the casting, in particular Louis, who works very well. The story, weirdly, works better with a Black Gay Male character in the role of Louis. It makes more sense, and changes the story a bit. Lestat's casting is better here as well - since he's more French, and is believable - as a vampire from 16th Century or 15th century France. The accent is perfect, as are the mannerisms.

Also, they are doing a good job of exploring the racial injustices, which both Lestate and the Interviewer don't quite understand. Eric Borganson as the interviewer is inspired.

I'm loving the series - it has far more layers than the books did, or for that matter the film ever did.

A digestive biscuit is only a graham cracker, except they're more likely iirc to actually be made with graham flour nowadays.

I'm pretty sure it's "mallows" (like the plant) and not "mellows" ... I have never had a smore - they look very messy to eat!

It's a camping/campfire thing. And they are delicious. Also not that messy - because usually the marshmallows are melted and not huge.

Also, yes, you're right. I couldn't remember how to spell them and spell check wasn't helping.

They didn't look like them in the show. They looked like a thick round waffle of a cookie.

The original marshmallows were, in fact, made with marshmallow... I'm gonna say "root", but idk.

I looked it up - while they are considered the same. They aren't really - the ingredients are slightly different. As are the flours.

I doubt it matters. The thing I saw on Great British Bake Off is not a smore.

A digestive biscuit is like a large animal cracker or lady finger, bland tasting and mildly sweet. I'd always pick a graham cracker instead for an ice cream sandwich or a smore. (I guess Nestle got run out of the solid chocolate bar business in the U.S. Those would work, too.) A ganache kind of misses the point that the hot marshmallow is supposed to melt the chocolate. A smore is supposed to be simple. Yes, you could spread ganache or Nutella as a substitute for a piece of chocolate bar, but then you'd have to have something to spread it with, missing the point of keeping it simple. And I can't imagine British kids saying how much fun it was to bake marshmallows in the oven. ;o)

I will give them props if they baked the graham wafers and made the marshmallows themselves though!
I guess if you are making the chocolate yourself, ganache makes more sense than trying to make a chocolate bar, and then melt it again?

But yeah - it's not a real s'more

That being said, I have only ever had them once - and it wasn't that amazing an experience that I particularly want to repeat it :D

I haven't had a chance to watch this season yet but yeah, that is definitely an attempt to make s'mores fancier. I am used to their themed weeks because I get why they want a change (whether its French or Italian) but from what I heard, it seems like it's somehow more awkward this season.

I hope you're feeling better! Hopefully the doctor can give you some answers.

I grew up with smore's - it's an American camping/girl-scout/sleep over thing. They work best if you are out camping, with a bonfire, roasting marshmallows, and throw them between two graham crackers with a hershey's bar between. They do not work outside of that - because you need the campfire bit to make it work.

Eh, see cactus watcher's response - above, he articulates this better than I do. It's better if you don't make the graham cracker or the chocolate or the marshmallow - it's supposed to be simple.

Feeling much better today - thankfully. (Guessing was something I ate either yesterday morning or on Sunday).

They edited out a lot of stuff in the Mexican day. And I think they do that now. (Noticed because I've read about things - that I've not seen on screen.)

They are at their best when they stick to what they know, though. When they jump outside of that - it gets awkward fro everyone.

Thank you! You articulated that far better than I did - and managed to nail exactly why the British Bake Off's take on smore's doesn't work.

It's not supposed to be a culinary treat. It's a fun campfire treat for kids. We even did it with a fireplace.

I've not seen a Nestle Chocolate Bar in ages - although I know they still exist. They also tend to use malt, so not gluten free - which may be why I've not seen one?

I can tell from the responses to this post - how many people have never had a smore in their lives. If you think Digestive Biscuits and Graham Crackers are the same, and that handmade marshmallows are better - you've never had a smore.
