Perhaps Whedon also enjoyed using Caleb to stick it to religion. (Assuming he would want to do such a thing.) It's a very important part of feminism--recognizing how religion is used to dehumanize women.
One of the things I liked about Spike was that he followed Buffy, not the other way around. He supported her always, giving her unconditional acceptance tempered with honesty and accountability. (When souled.)
I thought listening to Doug Petrie (I think?) gush about Riley was the funniest thing ever. Heaven help the audience when the writers behave like fans!
