More of this that and the other thing

1. Well, the news changed its mind this morning and said it was five idiots who took a submersible (The Titan) to see the Titanic Wreckage. (Apparently James Cameron has gone down 33 times prior to doing the film The Titantic.)
At any rate, I don't know if anyone has read Philip K. Dick's The Three Stigmata of Palmer K. Eldritch? But this article reminded me of a plot point in it, and I'm beginning to think we've all landed in Dick's scary future.
Extremism Tourism is Becoming a Trend
Extreme tourism has become a growing trend among thrill-seekers looking for an adrenaline rush, pushing the boundaries of conventional travel and, sometimes, of safe travel. OceanGate Expeditions, for example, is among several companies that cater to demand from private individuals wanting to explore the seas and even the seemingly unreachable depths of the world’s oceans.
“What I’ve seen with the ultra-rich – money is no object when it comes to experiences. They want something they they’ll never forget,” said Nick D’Annunzio, the owner of TARA, Ink., a public relations firm specializing in special events.
OceanGate launched successful expeditions to the Titanic wreckage in 2021 and 2022. On Monday, the US Coast Guard launched a search and rescue operation for a vessel belonging to OceanGate that lost contact during a private tour of the Titanic. The company said it is “exploring and mobilizing all options to bring the crew back safely.”
OceanGate Expeditions, based in Everett, Washington, was founded in 2009 by aerospace engineer Stockton Rush, who is also aboard the submersible, according to a source with knowledge of the mission plan.
You know there are other ways you can spend this money. There were 300 people killed in the Mediterrean's worst disaster on record in a migrant boat accident
The sinking of a packed migrant boat off the coast of Greece may be “the worst tragedy ever” in the Mediterranean sea, according to the EU Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson.
Dozens of people were killed and hundreds more left missing when the boat, traveling from the coastal city of Tobruk in Libya to Italy, capsized off the coast of Greece earlier this week. The true toll of the disaster is yet to become clear.
“We don’t have all information yet on what has happened but it seems like this is the worst ever tragedy we’ve seen in the Mediterranean,” she told a press conference in Brussels on Friday.
The tragedy has shone a spotlight on the EU refugee crisis in which every year, tens of thousands of migrants fleeing war, persecution, climate change and poverty risk treacherous routes to Europe.
Johansson condemned the role of “smugglers” who put people on the boats. “They are not sending them to Europe, they are sending them to death. This is what they’re doing and it’s absolutely necessary to prevent it,” she said.
According to Mother, who'd been following it, the people who died were mainly women and children, the men survived. The women died because they stayed behind to save the children.
Now, $250,000 would have bought another boat, and helped prevent this tragedy.
Ugh. Anyhow, it is admittedly entertaining to mock them. And no, I do not feel guilty for mocking the nitwits who decided to tour the Titantic Wreckage on the ocean floor.
There's theories on what happened. The US Coast Guard still can't find them. They've not made it easy - the submersible is painted white. (Note, next time paint it neon pink or a color that can be seen - although they may have done that deliberately to hide from sea creatures.)
Three Theories on What Happened
Arguably the worse case scenario is a catastrophic rupture in the submersible's outer shell, causing an implosion that would kill everyone aboard very quickly.
The wreck of theTitanic sits around 3,800m below sea level, where the water pressure bearing down on any given object is roughly 376 times greater than that exerted by Earth's atmosphere.
Humans cannot survive that kind of pressure, which is why we need a submersible. But, according to Australian robotics professor Stefan B Williams, that level of danger makes the margin of error small.
"Although the Titan’s composite hull is built to withstand intense deep-sea pressures, any defect in its shape or build could compromise its integrity – in which case there’s a risk of implosion," wrote Mr Williams in The Conversation.
Industry insiders told The Guardian that the Titan would probably have reached a depth of around 3,500 meters by the time communication was lost, meaning the pressure would be equal to 345 times Earth's atmosphere.
The vessel had a real-time monitoring system to detect any problems with the hull. In theory, that would give its operators enough time to send word of a problem or begin procedures to make an emergency surfacing.
The other two scenarios aren't much better. Either sank and trapped in a trench with the Titanic on the bottom of the ocean floor, or surfaced and floating about in the ocean waiting to be seen.

Me: Well you know, There's too many chiefs and not enough followers..
NG: Oh, I always loved that saying, it's so cute - but wait isn't it supposed to be Indians?
Me: I changed it, I don't use that any more.
NG: Why? It's not as cute.
Me: Because, it's politically in -- it's offensive to some folks.
NG: Why would it be offensive?
Me: Because -
NG: It works better with Indians, because of the tribal connotation, and sounds better.
Me: It would be like saying there aren't enough Italians.
NG: But I'd agree with that. Besides it's cute, but cuter to say with Indians.
Me: It was never cute.
I'd blame our esteemed educational system, but you know..
Enough of that, let's ruthlessly mock Twitter:

In case you can't see that? Twitter is banning people who are insulting Greek Gods. (As an aside? They also do this to people who insult fictional soap opera characters...oh and apparently according EM - the words CIS and CISGENDER are considered insults now and usage will result you getting banned from Twitter.

In case you were wondering if intelligence is required to become a tech-billionaire? It's not. Thank you, Internet for confirming this.
And, for kicks and giggles...

So, I guess some artists don’t know ChatGPT has also been trained on copyright protected books, stories, lyrics, poems without consent or compensation? Or they just don’t care when it’s not their skin in the game?
Writers are artists and cultural workers too. We need solidarity.
There you have it, finally, established proof that "Troll" Logic actually exists, thank you, internet.
How is that these folks haven't gotten Darwin Awards yet? Dumb luck? Although Twitter has become a source of endless amusement for me. I admittedly have a wry and rather dark sense of humor.

3. Still in a reading slump. The Cat Sebastian Book isn't working. Maybe a TKingfisher? I've got two that I haven't read? Or maybe the Illona Andrews, which doesn't require much focus at all? The problem is me, not the books, folks. I am struggling with brain fog. I go to sleep on the train. And it takes me longer to do everything.
The audio book is fine...it doesn't require as much attention.
Burn it Down spends far too long going after Horatio Sanz, and various colleagues of his from SNL during the 1990s and early 00s. Apparently Sanz allegedly molested, sexually harassed and manipulated an underage girl during a party, and over the course of time. At the party - Fallon, Fey, Shannon, and various others witnessed it and said nothing.
Years later, all charges were dropped, the case was fully dismissed, and people moved on. There's no substantiated proof that it happened. The amount of time Ryan spends on this case made me question Ryan's journalistic reliability. Ryan went to journalism school - I went to law school, so I pick up on this stuff. And the difficulty with sexual harassment cases is - they are almost impossible to prove. Unlike rape cases - there's no physical evidence. Also, without witnesses - it's basically he said, she said, and yes, everyone is capable of lying and often does, and not always knows it. We have a tendency to embellish truths or convince ourselves things happened that don't or twist the facts to suit us. I've watched people do it - not necessarily on sexual harassment. So, I find it a wee bit disingenuous of Ryan to go on and on about this particular scandal without legitimate proof. It's close to slander (it's not because she doesn't report on anything that wasn't already reported at length elsewhere.).
Then finally it moves on to Louis CK, who I already knew about. So far, most of this, I already knew about. (I didn't know about the Goldbergs or the Muppets...nor did I know everything that went down on Sleepy Hollow and Lost, but everything else, I knew about.) CK apparently came back after a bit of a self-imposed hiatus. Didn't apologize at all, and kind of just went on to do his act. (I don't know if he continued the masturbation bit or not. Honestly? Why would anyone do that? Isn't it embarrassing? Not to mention gross. What can you possibly get from doing this? Plus it shows a complete lack of self-control. IDK. I'm thinking we need to ruthlessly mock them. Or kick it? Or phase it with a phazer? That would probably work. Every time CK pulls out his wienie - phase it, he'd most likely stop eventually. )
After Louis CK, she starts talking to a Rabbi about Redemption and how to handle this sort of thing (I don't know why she felt a need to talk to a female Rabbi about this - I think the Rabbi wrote a book about it or something? Anyhow the Rabbi tells her everyone can be redeemed, but some don't want to be or think they need it. And the way forward is instead of saying you are sorry, ask how you can help or if the other person is okay), and then a psychologist who treats abusive and classic narcissistic disorders - and they go into detail on what a narcissist is, and the signs that someone is a narcissist. (Plays the victim, it's always everyone else's fault, never theirs, deflects blame, and feels a need to prove that they are superior to everyone else, a winner, and are entitled to success and rewards.) I kind of stopped there for today. I'm wondering if she's going to tackle Whedon in her book. She tackles Ezra Miller - who I also already knew about. And the enabling of various heavy weight assholes in Hollywood, who never atone for their mistakes (mainly because they are getting away with it, being enabled by others, and don't consider themselves any worse than anyone else. It's considered the norm - hence the problem.)
At any rate, I don't know if anyone has read Philip K. Dick's The Three Stigmata of Palmer K. Eldritch? But this article reminded me of a plot point in it, and I'm beginning to think we've all landed in Dick's scary future.
