Is the Weatherman clueless?
May. 21st, 2005 10:45 amLooking out my window this morning and at the morning weather report on NY1, I found myself wondering the same thing I have for the last two weeks: Does the weatherman have a window?
The weather report for NYC metropolitan area this weekend is rain, brisk wind, barely making it to 64 degrees. I look out my window - cloudless pristine blue skies and hardly any wind. I hike up to the movie theater (to get Sith tickets for cjlasky and me) and to the pharmacy thinking it's going to be chilly, nope, I'm hot in my light sweater and jacket - it feels like 65 degrees not the 57 they reported on the television screen. Yesterday, same deal. The weatherman said it would rain in the midafternoon and evening hours, but not in the morning. I left my house at 7:35 am yesterday morning and it was pouring, yet by mid-day no rain, evening? Completely clear. Makes one wonder about all this reliance on computers when a good window might be far more useful.
Also - all the news reports of long lines for Revenge of the Sith? Have been greatly exaggerated. The line was nonexistent for the theater in my area. Course it is playing on three screens, every other hour, 24/7 at that theater.
(I called cjlasky last night to figure out what time to go - and told him, he would not believe this: the times quoted were 3:45 am, 5 am, 6:30 am, 7 am, 7:45 am, 8:15 am, 9 am, 9:30 am, 9:45 am, 10 am, 10:15 am, 10:30 am, 11 am, 12 pm, 1:15 pm, 1:45 pm, 3:15 pm, 4:30 pm,11:30 pm, 12:30 pm, 1:30 am....
cjlasky: what happened to 5pm - 10pm?
me: no clue
cjlasky: this can't be right, try to see tomorrow...
me: ok)
So off I wander today, and discover, yes, they do have those missing times. Movie phone quoted the wrong movie times. It actually goes 3:00 pm, 5pm, 7pm, 9pm, or something like that. (Starting at 3am.) Still weird though and the oddest part? Are people actually going to this movie in the wee hours of the morning? While I admit I've been entertained by Star Wars, I'm not
that entertained by it. At any rate, there was no line. In fact the whole experience was actually quite pleasant and painless. Not at all what had been reported by news commentators - ie. long lines, rainy, and bad weather. Goes to show you that you really have to take information you read or see online, on television, on the radio or in newspapers with a grain of salt. Trust me, it isn't reliable.
The other question...when did movies become $10.25? What happened to $9.50?
Or $8.50? Or for that matter $5.50? I remember a time when $5.50 was expensive and we loved the $1 movie theaters. Now? $5.50 is a deal. No wonder I don't see that many movies on the big screen any more. (Two theaters in my area: one you can get an early showing for $5.50 up until 6pm. Later shows? $8.50 -$9.50.
The other, which granted has bigger screens and better seating,...sigh, has become $10.25 apparently. And guess which one is showing the Sith movie?)
