shadowkat: (whatever)
Well, I feel more or less fine today, which means it was allergies and whatever was in the air the last three days, isn't now or is drifting out of it.

I also cleaned up a bit, which always helps.

Caught up on the DVR. And...I watch far too much television and before you quibble - uh, I've seen practically every tv show on at least once. The only people on my flist who can give me a run for my money are : herself_nyc, buffyannatator, and possibly petzepillingo - they've managed to see shows that aren't even on tv yet or in the US. Now that's what I call true TV slut dedication.

I won't bore you with a run-down of all of them or myself for that matter.

Will state that my favorite continues to be The Dresden Files which I've fallen in love with in the same manner some folks on flist have fallen for Doctor Who and
Supernatural and possibly for the same reasons. Except Dresden isn't as scarey and the main character is more attractive and more well manly. David Tennent and the guy playing Dean Winchester are just too boyish for my blood. The only draw-back? I have a hunch Dresden isn't going to be renewed, while I know for a fact that Supernatural and Doctor Who will be around for at least one more season, possibly more. Yes, once again, I've fallen for a show - very few people like. It's annoying and makes me wish I had a Nielsen box, even though I seriously doubt it would matter all that much.

The Dresden Files is old school neo-noir mystery. The hero wants to be good, but has a dark edge and occassionally finds himself dabbling in the black arts to save people. He is plagued by a series of "femme fatales" and has a nifty and rather tough, combo of Inspector/Girl Friday on his side, plus the a weird side-kick/informant who has a shady background. The episodes are wrapped without cliff-hangers, but there is a definite character arc. Each one advances, much like the books in which they are based, Harry's character a bit further. We learn more about him and his struggles, not to mention his associates. The structure of the series reminds me a lot of old school detective shows, the ones that fell out of fashion when CSI got big, such as The Rockford Files, Murder She Wrote, Brimstone, The Profiler, Remington Steel, Columbo to name a few. I'm starting to miss them having gotten burnt out on their replacements. It also in an odd way sort of reminds me of Season 1, Angel, before they killed off Doyle and without Cordelia - which I would have enjoyed, not being much of a Cordelia fan and preferring Kate and Angel's dynamic far more.

If you are a fan of the books and expected the series to reflect them, you may have been disappointed. Outside of Harry, the lead, the television series reflects little of what was in the books. This did not bother me as much as I expected for a couple of reasons - 1) the main reason I kept reading the books is I loved Harry - so as long as the series nailed Harry, I'd be happy (and it has), 2) there were aspects of the books that annoyed me and I was ignoring because I liked Harry. (ie. The whole Fairy bit, The Knights of the Templar,
the heavy religious themes, and the *evil* villains. The TV series is bit less black and white in its characterizations.) And well, I like Terrence Mann, so it doesn't bug me that I get to see him as opposed to merely his voice emanating from a skull - which works better on the written page than on the screen - on screen it just looks silly.

The first three episodes of the Dresden Files were admittedly on the weak side. Although I rather liked "Hair of The Dog" - about the werewolves, which is odd, because normally I despise werewolve stories. Only one's I've liked to date are Jack Nicolson's Wolf, LadyHawk,
and An American Werewolf in London. The rest? Ugh. This one reminded me a bit of Wolf. Buffy reminded me more of London. The last five, including the one entitled Storm Front, loosely based on the novel version, were quite good. They engaged my attention, entertained me, and
advanced the characters.

Do I want to analyze the Dresden Files? No, not really. Nothing to analyze. But then I don't think there's anything to analyze on any other tv show on at the moment, outside of BattleStar Galatica. (And yes, I've seen Supernatural, Doctor Who and Dexter, now.)

Do I think they'll renew it? Don't know. I'm hoping they do. But have little control over these things, so refuse to worry about it. It is just TV after all. And I have the books. ;-)

I also saw: House, GG, Tudors, Blood Ties, B&S, DS, Grey's, Ugly, Office, 30 Rock, Lost, Dexter, Friday Night Lights, and The Riches this week. And really don't have anything to say about any of them. Except that FNL was quite good. House - has an interesting dynamic building between Cuddy, Wilson and House. Blood Ties is really silly, but a bit of guilty pleasure for the cop - I like the cop (Mike).. I am watching this for the cop. Sigh. It's making me miss Forever Knight, which was a heck of a lot better. Lost? Sigh. I like Desmond and I like Sawyer. And I like Hurley and Jin. But I was bored. The last two episodes just bored me. Enough with setting the stage already, start doing something!
