Well, already did the tv list. Not sure I've read enough books actually published this year for the first time to do the book list. But, I have seen quite a few films lately, so for what it's worth here's my seven best film list in no particular order:

1. Michael Clayton - a call back to the character films of the 70's. An excellent examination of one man's choices in the space of three days. A combo of the Verdict and Network. With perhaps the best performance I've seen from George Clooney, who managed to turn off the charm.
2. Eastern Promises - another character centric film, focusing on a midwife's search for a newborn's family after the mother dies giving birth and how she accidentally uncovers evidence regarding the Russian Mafia in her search. The central character is one of the top cleaners for the Russian Mob.
3. Once - a simple boy meets girl, boy loses girl and buys her a piano story told through the folk songs they write and record together in the space of weekend.
4. Hairspray - a joyful homage to the traditional musical. People burst out in song. Dance in the streets. And racism is discussed.
5. 3:10 to Yuma - a true Western. With great characters at its center. It's really a two man tale - Russel Crow's conman robber fighting for the soul of Christian Bale's earnest farmer.
6. The Waitress - another small film about a woman who makes pies and struggles with being knocked up by an abusive husband. Funnier than one might think.
7. Charlie Wilson's War - a funny look at Congressman Charlie Wilson's ability to fund a covert war on the Soviet's in Afganistan in the 1980s.

I saw more than seven movies this year, but these were the only ones that I feel are worth noting. The worste film I saw this year? Transformers. It's the only movie that I almost walked out of the movie theater on.
