Jun. 27th, 2008 07:00 pm[New icon is made by me! In short, to the extent one can own these things, I own it. Found it doing one of those interest meme pic thingy's. See they are good for something besides annoying people on your flist with dial-up.]
Quickly, because I have to make dinner and it's already 7. I finally gave in and bought an semi-expensive air purifier via Target today. Waking up twice in the night, coughing, and feeling like I couldn't breath, convinced me that $136 was a small price to pay for clean air.
And it is working, my eyes aren't itching anymore and I don't feel like like I have a perpetual cough. It's a Hepa True Air, with a permanent filter that just needs to be cleaned with a vacume cleaner twice a year and fairly quiet, not to mention energy sufficient. Works like a dream. If you are an allergy sufferer, like me, I highly recommend.
Then I watched the news. Is anyone else following what has been going on in Zimbabwe? It made me cry tonight, even though I've been reading about the escalating violence daily in the Metro and AM newspapers I get on the way to work each morning. These poor people are being forced to vote for a man they despise. If they don't, they are either killed or beaten. And Zimbabwe is a beautiful country, with beautiful people - I've seen the pictures, it's near one of the best wildlife perserves in the world. It's so sad. Why do people feel the need to control other people's lives?
Which brings me to a beautiful message I got from one of the leaders of one of the many social networking groups I belong to. I belong to about twenty, not that you can tell, since I rarely go to any of the events. I have a tendency to join things, but not participate. When I got into discussion boards - I was on about twenty at one time, I think I only really posted to four maybe five, and amongst those? only three that often. At one point, I got really lazy and only posted to the ATPO discussion board, because I liked the intellectual discussions about everything from Jungian and Freudian psychology to 18th Century Literature to the historical reprecussions of what happened in St. Petersburg. There's nothing cooler than posting a Buffy essay, and find people using it as a jumping off point to discuss gender roles in 19th century literature or the historical background of the Wiccan religion.
Anyhow...here's that message, edited to protect the writer:
( the message - which I liked. Warning, it might push some peoples buttons. But its words I try to live by...as I told a friend recently, if someone pisses you off - you have a choice, you can either choose to push it aside and keep the person in your life, or remain pissed and never see them again, both have consequences - and when you make that choice, you live with those consequences. )
Things that made me happy today:
1. A guy at work offered to insert the memory chips I bought into my laptop for free. So I don't have to worry about screwing up the thing myself or lugging it to some store in Manhattan. (I just have to lug it to work, which isn't that big a deal, since I have to go there anyhow.)
2. The message above
3. My air-purifier
4. My new icons courtesy of emberslog.
5. It's Friday
6. I don't have to get up early tomorrow morning (I was thinking of going white water rafting in upstake new york with a meetup group, but it was cancelled. YAY!)
7. Persepolis finally arrived via netflix!!
[Sigh, momster just called to inform me that my cousin is marrying some guy she met on the internet. My uncle, widowed now, is also dating some woman he meet on the internet. I've been on the internet longer than these people have and haven't met anyone. Momster's response: well, maybe you've just been frequenting the wrong sites? (Yeah, maybe lj and atpo and buffy cross and stake, aren't the best for dating. Probably should do more on MySpace and Facebook, which is where my cousin frolicked. I did date a few guys I met via the net but nothing ever came of it. One was an interesting doctor from Shang-hai, who I got along with better via email than in person - this always happens to me, it's annoying.)]
