This meta analysis on the Buffy comics, writing, and the relationship between readers and writers - is highly recommended! The writer discusses amongst other things - how a reader will often want a character to be punished for a deed and not understand why the writer chooses not to punish them for it. Also why writer's have characters do horrible deeds without explaining why or punishing them for the deed. And the dissonance that creates between what the reader wants and the writer wishes to convey.

One of the many topics discussed within the meta are: whether Tara's death in the tv series was a random act or a direct result of Willow bringing Buffy back. I haven't read the comments yet, but I'm guessing they are worth a gander as well.
This is a must read - if you write fanfic, into Joss Whedon, read the comics or watched Buffy.
Great post.
