Whoa...not sure what I think it about tonight's episode. Brain is dead from work.
Will need time to process...or not.

Oh well. Will state that it more or less revealed the Twilight arc on Buffy S8 to me or who Twilight had to be, and no had not read the most recent spoilerish bit on it.

[This is a rather long post, I'm afraid. Because I have a lot of thoughts and I want to express/share them, but am struggling to find the way to do it. I will cut tag to save my flist, but if you choose to read this post - please - make certain you read the part about what I brought with me into the theater - what was influencing my thinking/perspective at the time. Because I think that part is very important.]

Well, I decided to see Avatar in 3 D today, largely because of this review by Roz Kaveny, which I saw linked to in her lj. I respect Roz, who has been on the front lines of what can best be described as the culture wars for more than a decade. She also doesn't proselytze or judge, so much as convey her point of view even if it may differ from your own. Not an easy thing to do, as I'm sure most of us can attest, much to our own chagrin. ;-)

Why I saw Avatar and the negative and positive reviews regarding it )

My own take on Avatar is a complex one and difficult to put into words. To fully understand it, you'd have to know what I'd watched prior to seeing it this week, what I'd read, and what I thought about. Because I brought more with me into that film besides my body, my coat, hat, gloves, scarf, and purse, and of course 3 D glasses - funky sunglasses reminiscent of Risky Business (a Tom Cruise flick from the 1980s). I brought everything beneath the cut as well:

Quotes that haunt me from The People Speak, a filmed performance version of Howard Zinn's The People's History of the US, the book Unquiet earth and my own personal background )

My thoughts on Avatar...

Cold day, but not as cold as I thought, so I'm either getting used to it or the news is exaggerating. Although in comparison to the cold that I put up with living in KC, this is nothing. 26 degrees feels like 19 or 30 feels like 26, not a big deal - in comparison to 30 degrees below 0. You can't go outside without covering every piece of skin and still you fear frostbite. Also, I'm sorry, at a certain point you can't really tell the difference between 19 below and 20 below. Seriously, NYC'ers are wimps when in comes to weather. They freak when it reaches 90 and they freak when it reaches 19 degrees. People - talk to me when it hits 115 or -30, okay?

Have mixed feelings about the whole Twilight reveal, part of me is half-convinced it's an April Fool's joke - after all the reveal came with the April cover. The other part is very relieved and really, really hopes it is true, because there are some cool things they could do with it and it does track quite well with the story and makes sense (I did not want it to Giles and after seeing this week's Dollhouse, I was rather certain it was - although in hindsight the other choice works with the Dollhouse reveal as well, if not actually better.). And a third part is sort of skeptical and fears this is going to be one of those story arcs that makes me wonder why I bother reading let alone paying 2.25 a month to read this shit. A fourth part is ambivalent. And a sixth hopes this isn't supposed to a romantic reunion because that would suck beans on more than one level. There's some decent meta on the reveal - my flist is actually more into meta than freakout. Haven't seen any freakout or worry, just lots of amusement about freakout elsewhere - which I'm delightfully non-privy too, and tons of lovely meta. Which while disappointing, is also quite reassurring. After all, just a comic book. If you want to read the meta - go see [livejournal.com profile] 2maggie2, [livejournal.com profile] aycheb, and [livejournal.com profile] stormwreath, if you want to see the giggling go see gabrielleabelle.

Also have mixed feelings about this week's Dollhouse. cut for very mild this week's episode spoilers.. )
