Is anyone else struggling with LJ today or is it just me?

Enjoyed the weekend with my niece who continues to be adorable.

At work and trying not to be frustrated. I've come the conclusion that I would be a lot less anxious if it weren't for other people.

Finished the book Graceling over the weekend. It's a young adult fantasy novel - with a character that reminds me a great deal of Katniss in The Hunger Games - or a similar female narrative trope. This round her name is Katsa. The book apparently is a best-seller in Sweden of all places, also doing quite well in Germany. US not so much, but we have odd tast over here. It's rare that I read or want to read anything on the US best-seller lists.

Will try to write a review on it at a later point. No time now to write a half-way decent one now. And not quite sure how to without spoiling people. That's the difficulty with reviews - you always skirt quite close to the line regarding spoilers.

Currently reading George RR Martin's fourth book in the Song of Ice and Fire series - Feast of Crows. The first chapter or prologue reads like something out of a Shakespearen historical play - reminded me quite a bit of King Henry the V -the parts with Falstaff and Henry's friends.
Actually Martin's books remind me a lot of Shakespeare and
Charles Dickens stylistically. Similarily grim with bits of ribald black humor, and densely detailed, with numerous characters and points of view. Reading Martin is a bit like falling into another world, you become immersed in it. Just wish it was a cheerier one. Then again, there are days in which I quite glad it's not. I'm weird that way. I like dark angsty shit. Obviously - or I wouldn't be in love with the Wire and Buffy or Farscape, now would I? (I do have my limits though - Breaking Bad is too dark for even little old me or big old me, haven't felt little in a long time.)

It's cooler, not as hot this week as last and we got rain.

This season is getting hard to watch, compelling, very compelling, but also gut-wrenching. Sisinlaw told me she could barely watch it after a certain point - and I know what she means. It's not the cop stuff or the drug-dealing stuff, it's the schools.

Przy: They are junking the stats. Same as the criminal unit. So majors can become colonels.
Disappear rapes, turn felony burglaries into robberies...junking the stats.
Grace: Wherever you go, there you are.

My problem with this section of The Wire - is it is preachy as all get out. Clearly Ed Burns feels the same way I do about standardized testing. I despise it. Is hate, a strong enough word? So, yeah, I agree. But - it feels outside the story somehow, and a bit contrived. As we drift closer to the school, we move further away from the core characters. Also, you can almost hear the writers lecturing you. I agree with them. Completely. But. I think they went a bit over-board with it. Particularly in episodes 8-10. 10 hits you over the head with a hammer. And it is painful to watch.
I'm right now hating the area superintendent.

Outside of that? Some great stuff. Love Omar, damn...Herc don't mess with my Bubbles! )
