Cross-posting from dw again...because half my flist is having issues with lj's changes in formatting. I think - if you don't customize your flist and comments - you run into the formatting changes, while if you do customize or
ensure that you read everything in your own style - you don't see the changes? All I know for certain is I don't see them and haven't encountered them, nor have about 50% of my flist. It is literally split down the middle.
Half is ranting about it, while the other half appears to be bewildered and is asking "changes? what changes?". Meanwhile - in a hilariously ironic turn of events...LJ's question of the day is "take a deep breath and rant" - at least LJ's has a sense of humor.

2011 fandom meme or basically cultural obsession/interest meme

[Rather like this meme, more interesting than usual.]

Your main fandom of the year?

The Wire. (Although Doctor Who and Vamp Diaries fall in there somewhere.)

Your favorite film you watched this year?

Eh...don't really have one. Harry Potter - Deathly Hallows Part 2 may come closest - since I purchased it. But just watched Crazy Stupid Love last night and it was a lot better. (I haven't seen that many memorable films this year and am getting burned out on the violent, comic book, action flicks.) And I'm likely to see a bunch of films in the next four days - see most movies on vacation - that's when I actually have the time.

Your favorite book read this year?

Somewhat similar to the film one...read a lot, but nothing stands out.
Most have blurred together. The only two I remember clearly are Jim Butcher's Ghost Story and Kim Harrison's Pale Demon, both surprised me in how they took their main characters to a new place and changed their narrative arcs. In short they took risks. Few writers that write detective/mystery series do this. (Yes, I'm looking at you Janet Evanouich).
[Read the Hunger Games triology in 2010 so it doesn't count.]

Your favorite tv show of the year?

Hmmm...lots to choose from. The Good Wife long term wise. Doctor Who for the squee moments. The Wire in a completion sort of way (loved all of it). In a "loved that first season but have no idea whether they can keep it up", Game of Thrones.

Your best new fandom discovery of the year?

Fringe or Game of Thrones. It's a toss-up, but leaning towards Game of Thrones which was flawless and Fringe is really spotty (I just started S3). (I'd say Once Upon a Time, but there was no "dom" just a "fan" and lots of vocal and somewhat annoying detractors - so it hardly qualifies. Also not cult and far too mainstream. (ie - high in the Nielsen ratings and people at work/real life who love it, very low in the online fandom ratings. Good news? It will survive and not be canceled and I can discuss it in real life/face to face interactions. Bad news? No fanfic or fan interaction - since the cult fandom hates it. But hey, we can't have everything.))

Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?

Buffy Comics and all things Whedon - eh...the less said about this, the better.

Your fiction boyfriend of the year?

Detective Jimmy McNulty from the Wire. (yes, he beat out The Doctor)

Your fiction girlfriend of the year?

Doctor River Song from Doctor Who

Your biggest squee moment of the year?

The reveal on who "Doctor River Song" really is and her relationships to Amy, Rory and the Doctor. (Or the three episodes - A Good Man Goes to War,
Let's Kill Hitler, and The Wedding of River Song.) That was my happy place.
I actually bought S6 part 1 Doctor Who DVD, and asked for Part II as an Xmas gift - because I loved this so much.

Your biggest fan anticipations for the coming year?

Season 4 of Merlin, Justified, Game of Thrones S2, The Hunger Games - film, Christopher Nolan's the Dark Knight Rises, Ralph Fiennes directed Corianulous, Kim Harrison's - Pale Blood, Jim Butcher's sequel to Ghost Story, SMASH (the new musical series), American Gods on HBO, Homeland on DVD,
Game-Change on HBO, next season of Doctor Who, and possibly The Hobbit.
