- GRR Martin discusses the Avengers and the Avenger's Movie...

I suppose it makes sense that I keep getting enamored with fantasy writers who were Marvel comics fans. Considering I collected Marvel comics for 20 years. Got rid of them all last year, but oddly remember the stories in those pages more vividly than the romance novels I just read this past year and wrote about.

I love GRR Martin, he's so cuddly and down-to-earth. I also adore his statement in the interview he links to - where he says that he doesn't consider the torture porn flicks such as Hostel and Saw horror. I agree, they aren't really horror. More exercises in voyeuristic sadism.

Also, I'm rather enjoying Feast of Crows all of a sudden. Apparently a break was what the doctor ordered. The characterizations are so rich, the people so complex, and
the story so detailed and textured. I not only see his world, I can smell it and taste it, even when I may not want to. What's surprising is I had no problem picking up where I left off - half way through, and no need to re-read what came before. I could still remember the first half of the book vividly. This is odd. I can't remember 90% of the romance novels I've read in the last six months. But I can remember a book I put down in November of 2011. Good writing tends to stick with you longer. Or rather, good storytelling does.
But sometimes you need to read the bad writing...to wash the brain out, so you can enjoy the good writing?

[As you know, the more fannish I am about a writer, the more critical I am. I start to enter into this bizarre love/hate relationship. Hence - one post is wrestling with GRR's writing, the next being charmed by it.]
