I need to stop reading via lj Smart Women Who Read Trashy Novels...mainly because it keeps giving me books recs, which I end up buying then devouring. On the plus side most of these books are dirt cheap on the Kindle.

That said, I did find this cool link via the site:

A Pakistani Animated Television Series Featuring Female Superhero Fighting For Education

Cool, a superhero. What's his superpower? Oh dear. First of all, Burka Avenger is a woman.

A female superhero? So her superpower must be the ability to show off her boobs and bottom simultaneously, like Scarlett Johansson in that poster for The Avengers. Not quite. Burka Avenger is a master of Takht Kabaddi, a martial art that uses books and pens to defeat her enemies.

You mean figuratively? She beats her foes with intelligence? No, she literally just clonks them around the head with books and pens.

Is this a Batman thing? Was Burka Avenger traumatised by a flock of books in a cave as a baby? No, nor was she bitten by a radioactive book in a science lab, you dolt. Books and pens are her weapons because she's a teacher who wants to emphasise the importance of studying in her native South Asia.

Oh, now I get it. She's a social justice superhero, like Captain Planet. Kind of. Burka Avenger is the first ever animated series to be produced in Pakistan. She's the brainchild of local pop star Haroon, who wanted to create a positive role model to counter the Taliban's ongoing opposition to girls' education.

Sample dialogue?"The girls of today are the mothers of tomorrow. If the mothers are not educated, then future generations will also remain illiterate."

This all sounds a bit worthy to me. It's also funny. In one episode, a villain's plan to destroy London and Paris with a giant robot is scuppered by his inability to get a European visa.

Now I want to watch the cartoon. I swear the internet is like crack for pop culture junkies like myself.

The site did lie to me though - it told me that Alan Sepinwall's The Revolution Was Televised was for sale at $3.99 on Amazon Kindle. It's not. Still $11.99, dang it.
That's the price of at least two well-written trashy romance novels...

I need to get out of jail. It's making me cranky. Jail being my apartment and workplace. Sick and tired of being confined to both. So am going to lug my ass to the movies on Saturday with MD and watch Superman...finally. I have low expectations. And yes, it is still playing. It's NYC...a movie is always still playing somewhere.

Also need to wean myself off some of my addictions. Decided to stop drinking alcohol. We'll see how long this lasts. Limit it to social drinking. Should lose about 20 pounds doing that alone. Did last time. And ...give up ice cream cones and york peppermint patties. Particularly the york peppermint patties which I've become alarmingly addicted to. Last time I was addicted to them was back in 2002...this is not a good sign. Definitely a symptom of profound frustration. I always eat the things when I get profoundly frustrated.
