Jul. 29th, 2014 09:28 pm1. Have come to the conclusion that there is such a thing as too much plot and too many characters in a novel or series of novels. George RR Martin's novels are an example of too many characters and too much plot. His novels are making me want to go read Ernest Hemingway, the king of brevity and minimalism. Or at the very least e.e. cumings.
Also, he is brutal to the likable characters. I'm currently rooting for the mass slaughter of the Bolton and the Frey clan, but I'm not hopeful. Then again, it's admittedly more possible than Ayra and Jon being reunited, or for that matter Tyrion and Dany sitting down and discussing strategy. Martin teases but doesn't deliver on the things you want.
Martin also appears to think the way to put a character on the path to redemption is to brutally torture them and remove body parts. I beg to differ, but that's just me.
Yet, still compelling. I love his female characters. The man writes a wide variety of female characters, who are strong and interesting. Not many writers in his genre can do that.
2. Enjoying this season's Defiance - even if it is a bit convoluted and trippy in places.
3. On Facebook saw a posting about book addiction, where you go - "okay just one more chapter." I know this problem well. It's usually late at night. I'm thinking okay, just five more minutes. 30 minutes later. Okay, just 5 more minutes...then damn, I have to get up at 6 am tomorrow morning. We aren't doing this tomorrow night - no reading before bed. Next night...okay just 5 more minutes.
