Well, I enjoyed Gotham quite a bit more than I expected. Best new series pilot that I've seen to date. [Have only seen four, so that's not exactly saying much.] Jim Gordon is definitely growing on me - even though he's the weak link in the series, everyone else is more interesting than he is, including his fiancee, Barbara Keen, who appears to be holding her own secrets.

The series has made an interesting choice in focusing on Jim Gordon, with Bruce Wayne aka Batman, as a kid. It's an origin story but not necessarily of Batman, more of Gotham, with multiple character origins developed along with their relationships with other characters and Gotham itself. Sure Batman's origin is explored, but secondary to the rest. Which is what distinguishes Gotham from Smallville, Arrow, The Flash, and various other series. In some respects, Gotham is DC's take on Marvel: Agents of Shield, except it's better written, cast, and produced. Not to mention edgier. Sorry, Marvel, but I prefer DC's edgier take on superheroes on both the television and film front.

Donal Logue of Terriers portrays Jim Gordon's world-weary and somewhat crooked around the edges partner. With Jada Pickett Smith as mob boss Fish Mooney.

The episode has plenty of plot twists, quite a bit of action, and character development - without feeling overly busy or exposition heavy. Difficult to pull of in a superhero series - just ask Joss Whedon. Plus atmosphere; this thing is soaking in atmosphere. It felt like an old school noir serial placed inside a Frank Miller graphic novel. Complete with 1930s art deco aura.

The casting is almost pitch-perfect, there may be a few missteps here and there with the leads, too early to tell. (Not sure about Barbara Keen and Jim Gordon quite yet, but both are growing on me.) And Donal Logue, Jada Pickette Smith, and the kiddies (Oswald Cobblepot, Bruce Wayne, and Selina Kyle) are a joy to watch.
