The TV Slut Report - Outlander, etc...
Feb. 14th, 2015 09:36 pmStill sick, so hibernated and caught up on tv shows. Also for some reason or other, instead of cancelling my Showtime subscription, I upgraded for an additional $8 a month to HBO, Starz, Showtime, Encore. (Still oddly cheaper than what I was paying last year for phone, internet, and cable. And by cheaper, I mean over $100 cheaper. And I was getting less service. Go figure.) Anyhow this lead to me finally checking out Outlander on Starz: On Demand. It's not HD, dang it. But doesn't matter. Yes, it's that good. Was surprised by the pilot. Best pilot of a television series that I've seen in a long while.
Not sure why people didn't like it? It's well acted, produced, and written - at least the pilot is. Reminds me of the BBC costume dramas and Game of Thrones.
Surprised that I liked it, since wasn't overly fond of the book. Although that could have been a mood thing. Wasn't into romance novels at the time I tackled it. (At that point, I was binging on mystery and sci-fantasy novels.)
Anyhow - the three leads are quite good. One of which gets to play two roles. It's sort of a post WWII, 1700s, time travel historical fantasy sci-fi romance. Blends numerous genres.
Other tv shows made it through:
* Greys Anatomy - not bad. It continues to hold my interest, which is no mean feat considering it's in its eleventh season.
* Vampire Diaries - also is holding my interest. This episode reminded me of Buffy's The Body, except that episode was more effective and better written. But then Buffy in general was better written than Vamp Diaries. Really not fair to either to compare them, different shows, different time periods. Etc. Does have some great one liners, which are not surprisingly, delivered by Damon.
I love the friendships in this series, particularly Damon's. That character remains intriguing to me. Actually my favorite characters are Damon and Bonnie. Caroline has grown on me. ( spoilers )
* Nashville - I could do without the Rayna/Deacon storyline. Loved the other two storylines though - Avery/Juliette and Gunnar/Micah. The Rayna/Deacon story is a wee bit too cliche for its own good. My mother and I rip it apart on the phone. While we gush over Avery/Juliette. It's hilarious.
Did enjoy the music. Particularly the Deacon/Scarlette and her mom duet.
* Elementary - eh, that was a lengthy and convoluted way to get Joan back in the brownstone. Felt a wee bit contrived and I'm not sure it worked. But whatever.
Why they felt they had to do that - not sure. I was rather digging the new dynamic.
Did however like the twist at the end...
* Glee - the songs were great. The story.....not totally grabbing me. Feels sort of stuck together with masking tape.
But alas, I am a musical junkie, so will stick with it to the bitter end.
Still have 38 hours of tv viewing to go. Although I did finally throw in the towel and delete The Flash - a television series that many male critics love but whose appeal is currently lost on me. I just don't get it.
It's snowing and cold. I'm warm inside. With the radiator clicking and hissing away in the background. Also coughing and sniffling. But that's to be expected. Off to tryThe Americans copycat Allegiance.
