Poldark and Defiance
Jun. 23rd, 2015 09:31 pm1)Saw the first episode of the Masterpiece Theater presentation of BBC's Poldark tonight... I actually enjoyed it quite a bit. Don't remember the original which aired back in the 1970s and my parents watched avidly. I was a kid, not sure I saw much of it. My mother recently re-watched it two years ago. So, she remembers enough of it to inform me of the differences between the two.
Apparently Elizabeth was a blond in the original series.
Desmelda was a dark headed or a brunette.[ETA - apparently, I misunderstood my mom. It was - "I'm not sure I like the new actress as well as the original one."]
But other than that it's more or less the same. And she likes Aidan Quinn in the lead.
I really like Des, the kitchen maid, and am quite fond of Ross Poldark, so I'll stick with it. It focuses a lot of on making things work under impossible odds, and class issues -- which are major story kinks of mine. And while there is violence, it's greatly subdued in comparison to about 98% of the American television.
2) Gave up on Defiance - as did my co-worker, for the same reasons. It got too violent, and the plot no longer makes any sense. They've added yet another violent alien race that wants to destroy everyone. Alrighty thing. I'm done. Shame, I rather liked the Gunsmoke - Babylon 5 vibe.
