Cecil the Lion and other things...
Jul. 31st, 2015 09:59 pm1. Has anyone else been following The Cecil The Lion Story on various social media sites? They were discussing it at work the other day and on facebook, or I would have remained oblivious. LJ, you are not doing as good job at keeping me updated on current events like you used to.
After the evil dentist who murdered Cecil the Lion aka Walter Palmer, discovered that he'd become the target of internet outrage, he went into hiding. The US authorities couldn't find him yesterday.. Meanwhile, Zimbabwe is requesting that Palmer be extradited, as have over 100,000 people who have signed a petition requesting the US government extradite him.
Today, Walter Palmer's representative reached out to US federal authorities and he appears to be cooperating in their investigation into the matter at hand.
Meanwhile, back in the wild kingdom, Cecil's Brother has protected his cubs from rival Jericho, so they are no longer in danger. I'm loving these lions. This story is epic. Also...Lions =1, Humans =0 on the hero scale.
Personally? I think if you shoot animals, who are not a clear threat to you (self-defense) nor clearly an environmental threat (overpopulation of geese, squirrels, rabbit, rats, and deer due to stupid humans doing away with their natural predators) or for nourishment (deer, rabbit), you should serve the same amount of time you would have to serve if you killed a human being. If he shot a man, he'd get 20 years to life, with a possibility of parole depending on the circumstances. Should be the same sentence for shooting an elephant, bear, wolf, lion, etc.
It was premediated murder, with malice aforethought. Everyone involved should serve 10-20 years in prison and pay a hefty fine, which should go directly to environmental conversation effort. Pay the penalty. Also, you shouldn't have a hobby that hurts living things or anyone. That's a bad hobby. Find another hobby. I hear photography is rather challenging. Try that. Personally, I find stuffed animal skins and the stuffed heads of animals hanging on walls rather creepy and unnerving. Photographs last longer, and are far more appealing. Everyone who owns a gun should trade it in for a camera. It requires a bit more talent and might teach you empathy. World would be a better place for it, and you'd be happier.
Maybe I'll get a great camera and take photography courses. (Not that I own gun. Hate guns. No reason to own a gun. If you own a gun - you are a hair-trigger away from being a murderer.)
2. Watched another episode of Zoo this week, which is not well written, actually that's an understatement. The appeal of James Patterson is unfortunately lost on me. (No surprise there, I'm character driven, he's plot driven. And writes by committee.) I keep rooting for the animals to kill the dumb humans. Except for last week, I really liked the lesbian lovers in Antartica who decide to free their birds in the hopes that the bats will stop blocking the solar panels causing them to freeze to death. (I don't know why they didn't just try to leave.) I'm only watching it - because it hits two of my story kinks hard: A) group of diverse people, who come from all walks of life, trying to solve an environmental issue or puzzle by working together as a team, b) mother nature is acting crazy.
Definitely going back to the streaming this weekend. More Daredevil, which I psyched for, and I have Rectify, Sense8, Transparent, The Americans, Unbreakable Kimmie Schmidt, Bloodline, House of Cards, Orange is the New Black in my queue. Rectify has been rec'd to me by various people. I tried an episode out of order, and I realized I need to start from the beginning and see in HD. Same with The Americans. I'm craving snappy good dialogue. It's why I did love Breaking Bad, The Wire, Buffy, Farscape, BSG...the dialogue had a certain snap to it. Dialogue is what television is about.
3. Not sure what I'm up to this weekend. Tomorrow must go buy a new bathing suit (which I'm procrastinating), summer dress for parents 50th (I might be able to get away with a nice pants and blouse or a black sleeveless dress...also procrastinating, I hate dresses, find them insanely uncomfortable -- I know, I know, in the minority on this one. Except my mother does too, so possibly genetic), a few things I wanted last time which may be on sale (yes?? hope??), and a new wallet (current one is too small and reminds people of George Constanza's wallet from Seinfield). Probably should also get a new backpack, but L&T is hardly the place for that.
On the fence about a backyard barbeque, hosted by a lady from church that I don't know that well, and a bunch of friends - I'm not that close too, plus 89 others. On the Far Rockaways. And it's going to be 91 tomorrow. Eh. Also takes an hour to get there by subway. And I've already gone into the city.
So that's about four hours round trip by subway in one day? No.
Went out to look at the moon. One downside of this new apartment - is the windows are sort of Northwestern exposure, so, I don't see the moon. It's not blue. They lied. Or it's only blue without city streetlights, although my areas isn't as lit as other areas...and a lot more peaceful.
4. I've managed to find two non-whiny professional writers - JK Rowling and Neil Gaiman. Rowling is hilarious on Twitter. Except I can't seem to figure out or get into Twitter...so there's that.
