Good Place Season Finale

Yeah, I know...we have television shows that are largely forgettable with 22 episodes (I'm looking at you Once Upon a Time) and brilliant little gems that seem to have hardly any episodes.
Actually, I've come to the realization that the less episodes the series has, the better the writing. That pattern has been prevalent for some time now, with a few exceptions here and there. I think the reason is rather simple -- it's easier to be tight and have well-written episodes with less of them.
That said, I have mixed feelings about the finale.
I liked the message but have mixed feelings about how it was executed and the big twist. Very much a commentary on the cult of the individual or "individualism" or "cult of the personality", along with "moral deserts" -- furthered by reality television, much of our media, he who shall not be named, and Ayn Rand enthusiasts. It's the polar opposite of communism. Doing things to reward the self or the brain's concept of itself.
Also, came to a realization about Eleanor's last name "selfstrap" -- strapped by self or trapped by self.
I'm going to have to ponder the episode for a while. It definitely was not what I expected.
But I'm left hoping that...we don't lose what is brilliant about the series due to this twist.
