Sep. 23rd, 2019 10:16 pmKen Burns' Country Music documentary on PBS just gets better and better as we move forward. Tonight's episode made me cry and smile at the same time. It was inspiring and comforting in how it depicted a polarized country in the late 1960s and early 70s brought together through music and shared personal experiences and kindness. Also I've fallen in love with Johnny Cash (although I already was).
And come to a whole new appreciation of musicians such as Janis Joplin, Kris Kristofferson, Bob Dylan, Merl Haggard, John McEuon, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, The Carter Family, Charlie Pryde, and Willie Nelson.
Did you know Shel Silverstein wrote the Johnny Cash single "A Boy Named Sue"?
Or that Johnny Cash brought Bob Dylan onto his weekly variety show to sing "A Girl From the North Country"?
Or the Kris Kristofferson wrote "Me and Bobby McGee" and "Wake Up Sunday Morning"?
Also Kristofferson went to Oxford and majored in English Lit and Poetry. He has a Masters Degree in it. It's why he may well be one of the best lyricists out there. Country music has great lyrics, which as Charlie Pryde states you can actually hear -- the lyrics are often harder to make out elsewhere.
Willie Nelsen liked Jazz and blended it into his music. They didn't know what to make of him as a result. He kept trying to do it their way, with no success, and finally gave up and decided to just be Willie Nelsen. He felt everyone put a bit of jazz in their voice.
And the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band which was initially rejected by Country Music Stations, got embraced by everyone else and their album "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" sung by blue grass and early country legends became an iconic hit?
It also goes into the women such as Tammy Wynette and Maybelle Carter.

We find our comfort where we can, don't we? For me -- it's often mostly in music. All music. Music comforts me, and calms me. And loving this documentary -- more than expected. I think because those who put it together -- really put their hearts into it.
