Jan. 18th, 2020 11:53 am1. I need to do laundry - the only question is when. Do I try at noon? Wait a bit longer? We have only one elevator at the moment. The other one is being replaced.
And I'm never quite sure what I'll run into.
ETA - went down there, sigh, not empty. So I'm kind of working around folks. Did get it in, but whether I get a dryer is another story. I wanted to kick the person who had laundry that was completed and had not come down to switch it out.
It's snowing, and cold. Hence the snow and no rain. A good day to do laundry in the basement of the apartment building. I ran into a bunch of other people. Including a group of twenty-somethings who appeared to be speaking either Russian or Polish, my guess is Russian. But I honestly can't tell the difference between the two spoken languages. Written yes, spoken, no. My ear isn't that good.
2. The Good Place - this week's episode (I don't know or care what the title was.)
The fourth season of the Good Place isn't very good, UNLESS you happen to love and/or share Michael Schur's particular brand of humor and thought the Office was the best thing ever. BUT, if you were anything like me, and found the Office to be unwatchable and have yet to have made it through a season let alone a full episode of a Michael Schur sitcom, and were watching the Good Place solely for the cool philosophical jokes and whimsy, then you are going to hate this season. [Actually, I kind of want to put a warning in here: If you don't like The Office, Parks & Recreation, Brooklyn Nine-Nine - do not waste your time with this one, or just skip seasons 1 and 4, and only watch the last four episodes of S1, all of 2 and 3. Wish someone had warned me. Oh well, too late now. I'm invested.]
If you ignore all of that -- there's a few nice bits here and there, which I kind of wish they'd done a better job of exploring.
( spoilers )
3. I'm currently reading The Ghost Bride by...(hunts it down) Yangsze Choo, a Maylasian Chinese writer. And after hunting down the author's name discovered that it was being turned into a Netflix Television Series in Chinese with English subtitles.
Here's another link to the series description - Slated for Release January 23 .
Well the trailer certainly makes me want to continue reading. Although the actors are not what I'm picturing in my head.
It's a ghost story and a murder mystery, integrating Chinese and Maylasian folk legend, history, mythology, and cultural practices. Also a bit of a coming of age tale.
I'm finding it compelling in a way and the writer is better than most. Good descriptive style, even if the voice isn't that distinctive. Most writers sound alike, unfortunately.
However, as a writer, I learn a great deal reading novels by people from other cultures and ethnicities. And right now, I'm on an Asian culture kick. I'm interested in dramas and books that take place in Asia. I find the Asian culture fascinating -- it's so different from my own in many ways, yet weirdly similar. The similarities surprise me more than the differences. We're really not as different as we think.
Brief description? Pan Li Lang receives an offer from the Lim family to become a Ghost Bride to their recently deceased son and heir. She'd previously been betrothed to his cousin, who has now become the heir and the family has broken the offer. Her opium addicted father, who fell into opium addiction after the death of her mother, is little help. And as time passes, the ghost of the deceased son starts haunting her dreams and following her...apparently he was murdered and she must help him find his murderer and get revenge or be lost in the Ghost world forever.
