It snowed and now its raining, and it will be gross tomorrow. I did not venture out as planned today. Mainly because it was overcast and cold, and why bother? So I sent the robot vacuum around the apartment, made up the bed clean, and hopefully tomorrow - I can do some laundry.

Finished both Yellowjackets and Dexter: New Blood on Showtime, prior to cancelling my free trial - which I've been told is still accessible until February 3rd.

1. Yellowjackets - it's basically Lord of the Flies meets Alive meets Blair Witch meets Lost with teenage girls. It's 2021, a month before the Yellow Jackets (a girls soccer team that made Nationals) twenty-fifth high school reunion. In 1996, the girls team made the Nationals and they took a private plane to the tournament - but the plane never made it there, instead it crashed in the Canadian Wilderness. They were stranded in the wilderness for nineteen months, with a crippled gay coach, and the two sons of one of the coaches who died in the crash.

The story is told in flashbacks. And we're told early on that the girls resorted to cannibalism at one point, and hunted each other. We're also told that they kind of went a bit loony - one of the girls is schizophrenic and had gone off her meds.

Not everyone appeared to make it back, and we're only in the points of view of four of the players, out of about sixteen. It's kind of mystery, and the finale episodes only answers a few of the questions, but leaves many unanswered and poses more questions - which is similar to LOST.

I found it kind of frustrating. And I think it may be spread too thin. The writers would have been better off - revealing a lot of things earlier. Also I was a little disappointed, because the reveals are a bit of a let down. It attempts black comedy at various points, so I'm not sure it knows what it wants to be? Very subversive of various genre tropes, and blends various tropes. So, on that end, it's good and quite compelling. Just kind of frustrating at the same time? I was waiting for a huge payoff - and I didn't quite get it. Not helped by social media hyping it up - and no, it does not quite live up to the hype. I was a little disappointed in it.

2. Dexter: New Blood - this was a lot better. I binged all ten episodes in two days. It took off and kept on going. And had a very satisfying ending to the entire series. This is the last season, and kind of ties up all the loose ends. It was funny in places, and had a good character arc. Although I don't think it works if you've not seen the series that came before it. It does work if you missed the finale season of Dexter - which I did. I did skip the sixth season, because I stopped watching Showtime around that period, so only saw the first five seasons. Season 5 and 6 kind of went off the rails.

This season is better than both.

And it has a nice sense of irony to it. vague spoilers )

3. Found National Theater Live on my Roku Smart TV, and subscribed to it for $12.95 a month, or until I decide to cancel it.

Last night I watched Frankenstein with Johnny Lee Miller as the monster and Benedict Cumberbatch as Frankenstein. They flip roles for it. One night Lee Miller plays the monster, the next Cumberbatch does. And they filmed both versions.

It's a compelling play, and makes a strong point about monsters - and how they are created. And how man can only create monsters, because of the darkness inside him, while only God can create life. Also makes a very strong point about hubris or pride - and how the attempt to become God, makes man into a monster.

Anyhow, a compelling and haunting play that I felt was worth seeing, if only for the performances of the two actors at the center of it. Although if sexual violence triggers you - you might want to skip.

I've stayed away from the news today. If anything happened, I don't need to know about it.
