y2/D365 - And..We have Reached the End
Mar. 16th, 2022 08:57 pmBecause I'm not sure I can do another full year of this...it's exhausting.
I keep losing count.
Also, I think I already lost count.
My workplace went remote and NYC went on full lockdown on March 16, 2020. Although for the most part it was that week the 16-20. The city was pretty much fully locked down by March 20, 2020. That for NY and the US was the beginning of COVID restrictions and protocols, even though COVID most likely showed up in the US as early as November 2019, if not before.
I was going to do a lessons learned post on the last day or how far we've come or what has all changed in the last two years - kind of a year end wrap up like folks do at New Years? But I'm tired and really don't feel up to it at the moment. I'm sure you'll survive. I know I will.
Instead, I'm going to about the on-going saga of my apartment complex's boiler (among other things).
It was cold in the apartment last night. For the second night in a row - I wore the warm pjs. I thought they were just being careful with the heat - until I exited the apartment complex this morning and saw a sign in the doorway stating the following:
"EMERGENCY! We have no hot water or heat. We called the mechanic, and are waiting for him to arrive to fix it."
Well, that explained why it was so cold in my apartment.
This was at 6:30 AM this morning. So in the back of my head all day long, I was praying for the boiler (which for some reason I keep wanting to call broiler) to be fixed.
I was mostly concerned about the hot water - I can always put sweaters on, and it's in the 40s, 50s and 60s at the moment any how.
I arrive home. And am reading the sign - which states that the hot water is back on, because the mechanic came at 7:15 AM and fixed it. So it was back by 7:25 AM. As I'm reading the sign, the Super's wife, Monica, opens the door for me - and tells me that its not working again, because of a electric wire malfunction.
Monica (with heavy Polish accent): They replace the Burner, or the machine that runs the boiler. It is a brand new machine. But the wiring didn't quite connect. (She mimes wires connecting from the burner to the boiler with her hands or to the individual apartments - it wasn't clear.)
Me: So do we have hot water now?
Monica: We push button it won't reset. And it won't work. Because wires won't connect. And so we call him to come back. But he can't come back. So we call another company. Prior it was automatic - but since the connection isn't working - I have to call direct. And I wait and wait...new company is sending someone. I call the Scott (this is the management company rep) and he say he will get hold of them to come because we must have hot water.
(Apparently we don't have hot water, lovely).
Me: So when will we get the hot water back - tonight?
Monica: They are coming to fix. Because wires don't quite match up, so they need to fix that part. But we have whole new machine. But..The Boiler is very very old. (Now I'm confused.)
Me: When are we replacing the broiler?
Monica: You mean Boiler. We not replacing boiler. We don't need to. Just the Burner - and it's been replaced, it just wasn't connected quite right - so they need to come back and fix the wiring. Boiler is fine. It was Burner that needed replacing and we have done so. Brand new. Fine. Just wires didn't connect right for some reason - so they come back and fix. I have no sleep, up most of the night, for last two nights, and up again at 3am, calling in help - and waiting and waiting. They come. I am able to wash dishes with hot water, but go to take shower - it's all gone. All these apartments go through it quickly.
ME: So no hot water now?
Monica: About 80 degrees maybe? Lukewarm.
Then she got into a conversation in either Polish or Russian with a young woman and her family. (None of these people were wearing masks. I was the only one with a mask on - a KN95.)
Good news? The heat and hot water came back on around 8 pm. So, yay!

So, I have an app on my phone that tracks the infection rate in New York State, and by county in NY. Yesterday, we were all at 3.63%, while today it's 1% and below. Why the huge difference? The number of folks getting tested. Hardly anyone got tested yesterday, so higher number of positives, while a ton of folks did today. They really need to be more consistent on the testing, I think.
How accurate this app is - I'm not certain. It's a State App, that is monitored and run by NY State Department of Health, so it should be accurate.

On the DST debate. I checked out the map... Daylight Saving Time Gripe Assistant Tool.
Daylight Saving Time Gripe Assistant Tool
A handy tool to help make your case when whining about a biannual time change, following earlier explorations of the geography of DST effects.
Weirdly - it makes my family's case for DST. I'd get more sunlight - if my preferred sunset time is 6:30 pm, and sunrise 6:30 am.
I can see why the Central US may feel differently though.
I just hate the switching back and forth all the time.
Discussion with Twitter regarding DST.
Twitter: I get up at 7 am, I don't want it to get light earlier than that.
Me: I get up at 5:45 am to get to work by 8.
Twitter: Morning person!
Me: I'm not a morning person either. Crazy workplace has 7:30-3:30pm or 8-4pm. Sigh. The Universe has a wicked sense of humor. (And I have an hour and a half commute).
I keep trying - but my body does not want to go the morning route. Yet, I can't find a job that would work for me. Oh well. I usually get to bed by 11 or 11:30.

Anyhow, this is the last entry that will look like this and have the Corona Virus notation. Not that I won't discuss it again, but I'm ending the pandemic blogging. Or rather I'm ending the "daily" pandemic blogging. I may actually not do a post tomorrow night, we'll see. In short - we're back to "spontaneous musings". It was a nice experiment, but I don't see any reason to continue...it's kind of depressing.

Today listened to a butt-load of Bobbie Gentry songs on Apple Music. She's not really country, more easy listening? A lot of her songs are story songs. For instance she did the first release of the Reba McIntyre song Fancy. She's best known for Ode to Billy Joe. Also has a rendition of Eleanor Rigby. Oddly, or not so oddly, I prefer Aretha Franklin and Gentry's takes on the Beatles.
Like I stated in a previous post - I have a fondness for story songs. Particularly ones about flawed folks.
Mickey Guynton is a country singer that blew me away last year with this haunting song .... Black Like Me and What You Gonna Tell Her.
And stumbled upon these just now...
All I Know So Far by Pink and
weirdly a rendition of Led Zepplin's Stairway to Heaven by Dolly Parton, also this duet by Reba McIntyre and Dolly Parton Does He Love You who is a very interesting singer and songwriter, with a long career.
And here's Bobbie Gentry's rendition of I'll Never Fall in Love Again [Which I identified with. Romantic love can be overrated. ;-) ]
(I listen to music from 6:30 am to 5:30 pm every day, with breaks here and there in between. And I pretty much listen to everything. Today it was a mixture of country, classical, and classic rock, yesterday it was John Lennon, Joni Mitchell, and others..also Godspell, Pippin, Jazz, and Hip Hop. )
