Met up with Wales today. Which was dicey to plan - since the subways were screwed up this weekend due to "track replacement" work. They do it during the weekends and at night. Reroute various trains. Etc. So to visit me, Wales had to go north first (I live south of her) the switch trains and go south again. Basically a fifteen minute ride became a fifty minute ride. We'd made plans to go to Hamilton's - an outdoor/indoor restaurant with standard American fare - it's actually pretty good.

Also not helped by the fact that I was battling a sick sinus headache which is still refusing to abate completely. It made me feel a touch off. We languished at the restaurant, after a ten to fifteen minute walk to it from the subway station, then lazily languished in a nearby community garden.
Ran into a little girl with tiny plastic bunnies - which for a while I thought were chopped off flowers. Her mother was filling up a plastic water table - so she could play with the bunnies in the water.

Wales enjoyed it - and wants to do it again soon. I think she prefers my neighborhood to hers. It's definitely quieter, and less busy, also not as...yuppified. Not sure what else to call it. I was happy to see her - but felt off due to the damn sinus headache which I blame on the weather, menopause, and allergies. Also I was sweating profusely, came home dripping of sweat and changed clothes.

Prior to meeting up with Wales, Mother called.

Mother: Just thought I'd call to let you know that You're father went into the Emergency room at 2 am last night. I spent from about 3a to 5am with him, came home got some sleep, and am going to church to sing this morning.
ME: Wait, shouldn't you get more sleep before going to sing in church?
Mother: I got plenty. I slept from about 10:30-1am, then couldn't get back to sleep due to worrying about your father - so went over to be with him - then came back and slept from 5 am to about 8-9 am.
Me: Okay.
Mother: Just thought I'd call and tell you this, since I know you've got plans with Wales later.

The difficulty with all of this? Is we all still have this insane hope that my father will magically get well and be returned to us without Alzheimers.
And there are days, when he's more lucid and seemingly improved, that feed that hope, only to have it all dashed again.

My father has a UTI again, apparently.

Wales doesn't know how to use Twitter, and only wants to discuss politics on it. I refuse to discuss politics, my blood pressure can't take it, even though we agree. I feel that Twitter works best if you don't discuss politics on it - in fact it is better if you discuss anything else.
(I'd say this is true of all social media.)

Me: I think it's 60/40 regarding masks now.
Wales: I don't wear a mask on subways...or rarely..
Me: Ugh ( I look at her, and sigh). I do. Every day.
(She's kind of lacksdaiscal about health issues, hello smoker. Although I didn't see her smoking today.)

Twitter..

1. Wherein I get into an odd semantic battle with Courtney Milan (annoying lawyer turned interesting and rather entertaining romance novelist). When she's playing romance novelist - she's likable. When she's playing lawyer - I want to smack her. Making me wonder if there's something about that profession that brings out the brat in people?

The conversation every Buffy fan has with someone before they start watching: "It doesn't fully click as a show until mid-season two. Then it is pretty much great until season six. Okay, season four is a little bumpy, but has great episodes."

Me: Not every Buffy fan - the Buffy scholarly community loved Buffy S6, actually there's a huge segment of Buffy fandom that loved S6, and had issues with S7.

[He ignored me.]

I honestly think sometimes that we need to remove "every" from our vocabulary, or some of us do?

Men rush to get vasectomies after Roe vs. Wade Abortion Ruling

Thomas Figueroa always knew he didn’t want children. Growing up in Central Florida, he remembers his classmates getting pregnant as early as middle school, and had considered getting a vasectomy for the past few years.

But after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade on Friday, he rushed to schedule one. He registered Monday for a vasectomy with Doug Stein, a Florida urologist known as the “Vasectomy King” for his advocacy of the procedure.

“It is something I put on the back-burner of my mind until very recently, when the Supreme Court decision happened,” said Figueroa, 27, who lives in Tampa. “That was basically the triggering factor right there. It pushed my mind to say: ‘Okay, I really do not want children. I’m going to get this vasectomy now.’ ”

Hee Hee Hee. I can't remember whether I already posted this?

Almost done with Stranger Things - was a touch disappointed by it. It drags in the middle, and the constant onslaught of 1980s pop culture and political references is starting to grate on my nerves.

Dustin: We can call it WaterGate. Get it? LOL
Friends roll their eyes at him in unison. As do I. Duffer Brothers are a bit too much like Dustin for their own good.

Part of the problem with this series is half the kids are good actors or have remained really good actors, the other half, have not.

Also it's jarring how much they've all grown. We meet them when they are 12, now they are all close to twenty years of age, with a few exceptions.

Time Traveler's Wife got cancelled. Which surprised me - not that it was cancelled, so much as I thought it was a limited series or one shot that would end after one season. Now I'm even less interested in watching the rest of it. I did try the second episode - and ew. I prefer the film.

Almost done with archiving most of 2011 - and a good portion of the items archived are reviews/meta about The Wire. I wrote over 23 reviews of episodes from The Wire, also a lot on True Blood, Game of Thrones, and Vampire Diariess.

None of the television shows this year have grabbed me in quite the same way. I see critics lists, and I'm kind of unimpressed. I like The Bear, but it didn't bowl me over or make me want to write much about it.
