1. Not feeling up to snuff, thinking it is a combination of allergy season and lack of sleep. Have chosen to forgo the CPAP Machine tonight - to see if I sleep better. I was sleeping better without it. (I don't want my irritating experiences with the damn thing to put anyone off of it? Everyone is different. I may work perfectly well for somenone else.)

Lots of post-nasal drip resulting in a case of laryngitis. I'm not sick in any other aspect. So thinking allergies. The pollen count is high at the moment, as is the mold.

2. At any rate - I kind of bumbled my way through work. Brain fog in earnest. That's okay, not all that much was required. Had a brief chat with Breaking Bad (aka the grumpy philosophy professor - which is actually more accurate, he was a philosophy professor ages ago, I'm thinking an existentialist? He kind of looks like a bewildered Sartre by way of Ralph Waldo Emerson). I don't mind talking to the grumpy philosopher or reporting to him or working with him - it's a lot easier on my mental health and physical health than reporting to the mean drill sergeant.

Found out via Moscow Co-worker - that my nutty workplace has decided to play musical cubicles and move everyone - not to another building, just around the floor. Read more... )

Depending on how I feel tomorrow morning - will depend on if I have to call in another FMLA day. Damn, I'm taking more FMLA this year than last.

Oh, as a side note? Co-workers were impressed by my new hair cut, and really liked it. It was very different. And one wondered if I had a new name to go with the haircut, something fancy like Vanessa. Apparently my given name isn't fancy enough.

3. I think my actor crush on an actor may actually pan out for a change. I'm notorious for developing crushes on actors who don't appear in anything and I have to hunt down their roles in increasingly shitty stuff, or worse they were really only good in one role and nothing else (I'm looking at you James Marsters and Anthony Stewart Head, Richard Hatch, and sigh Katee Sackoff, Ben Browder, and Claudia Black, etc.). But this round...my crush is on Cillian Murphy who managed to blow away more people than just me. He also blew away Robert Downy Jr, Emily Blunt, Margot Robbie, Matt Damon, Christopher Nolan, etc. So I've hopes to see him in more movies.

The NY Times - even suggests a few options (I already tracked down a lot of them this summer.) So far I've seen Sunshine, and I discovered him in Peaky Blinders. Also seen him in everything but Dunkirk that Nolan's done.

4. Mother's friend, MG, barely survived surgery on Monday.

5. Politics and religion, albeit briefly..

We're standing in the conference room basking in the warmth of the sun and wishing we could move our cubicles in there.

6. I'm enjoying "The Bride" on e-books (Kindle), it's also available in paperback (saw it in the book store). It's about a snarky vampire who gets roped into marrying a Werewolf to keep the peace. But she doesn't agree to the marriage for that reason - she agrees to find her best friend and the only thing in the world she actually cares about, who went missing around the werewolves and particularly the one who she married.

There's some interesting world building - in regards to Weres and Vampires, who are species, and not humans turned into weres and vampires, but separate species from humans, with different blood.

It's kind of innovative? I like innovative Vampire stories, mainly because they are difficult to find.

Also enjoying "Yellowface" - which is a biting and rather subtle satire about the publishing industry and its racist attitudes towards people who aren't white or not in power. Most of which are just lazy-ass ignorance, and a desire not to look at one's own short-comings and guilt. It may help that I have an ax to grind with the publishing industry myself and am finding this oddly validating and cathartic at the same time?

7. This leads me to a sort of realization this week as to why I've stopped reading or really writing reviews (I write them, just not as often, and more to keep track of what I've seen and read, and thought about them).
The whole thing is insanely subjective. Glenn Kenny, the neighborhood film critic that I used to have drinks with - with Wales, back in the day - disliked American Fiction and found it toothless, but raved about the Holdovers and Killers of the Flower Moon (he's a Scoreses fanboy, so there's that). And I thought - this is why I don't read film reviews any more.

Meanwhile, there are other critics who loved American Fiction. To each their own, I guess?

8. Almost forgot? I managed to make Orange-Pinapple-Mango Sorbet via the Ninja Creamer. Added a little rum - which ensured it didn't freeze into a block of ice. Smashed down the Pineapples and did same with mango, and used orange juice and a bit of rum. Made it more orange sorbet than pinapple. But it is kind of cool combo together. Refreshing.
