Nov. 24th, 2023 07:49 pmQuiet day. I meant to do more but I barely slept, so was lazy, and dozed.
Did take a short walk and picked up a few odds and ends from Carnival - the corner Fruit and Vegetable Store, which feels a bit like walking into a European or International Grocery Store - it has stuff from India, Germany, Turkey, Eastern Europe, and Central and South America. Also the Middle East. You literally can get chocolate from five different countries in this place, along with assorted teas, and other weird speciality items.
I did not. I just got chocolate, diakon radish, leek, turnips, broth, and that's about it? Oh, some energy drink.
And I watched Funny Girl on Amazon Prime. I'd never seen it. It's the remastered version. Better than expected, it holds up well, and the following is apparent after seeing it: 1) it was clearly written with Barbara Streisand in mind, and I can see how it made her a star (although she was already on her way with her music career). 2) you have to be a singer to do that role and not just a singer but able to belt it. You have to be a singer along the lines of Ethel Merman, Barbara Streisand, Cher, or Lea Michele. If you can't belt - you can't do that role. And not a high soprano - it's written for an alto. 3) It's really hard to see how you can successfully do a revival of it - because it kind of was written for Barbara Streisand, who fit Fanny Brice. Fanny Brice was skinny with a big nose, Jewish, and a comedian/singer. And damn, Omar Sharif is an excellent actor - he held his own opposite Streisand. (Not my type though - never done anything for me.) It's well-done, drags a bit in the middle like pretty much all biopics, but the first half is really good. Pretty much up to and including Rain on my Parade. Once they get together - the focus shifts more to Nick's inability to handle Fanny's success and his gamboling habit. (In reality, Nick was a crook and a con-man, who Fanny was constantly bailing out of trouble. He didn't beat her, I think he did cheat on her though. They kind of watered down his character in the film and musical.) At any rate, I can see how Streisand won the Oscar and the Tony for that role. She actually tied with Katherine Hepburn that year - they shared it, the Oscar, not the Tony.
Memage
1. What did you eat on Thursday?
Non-traditional dinner - rock cornish game hen, salad, potato, green beans, and pumpkin pie (that was traditional). I made most of it myself.
2. How many miles (kilometers) did you drive on Thursday?
It was at my apartment with a friend. No driving required.
3. How many relatives did you see on Thursday?
None. My family doesn't do that. Bro & his wife went to Maine, Niece and her boyfriend went to Mount Rainer and the Olympia Range, Mother visited a friend's family. I had it with a friend. When I was a kid, we usually just had it with each other, and occasionally brought my mother's mother to join us.
4. What did you wear on Thursday?
Kind of sweat pant joggers (black) and a soft t-shirt. (I never dress up for the holiday - it's in my apartment with either just myself or a friend for the most part. I personally think it's nuts to dress up - I mean you are eating messy food that will most likely get all over your clothes, and possibly cooking.)
5. Are you planning to buy anything in particular on Friday?
I bought stuff online on Thursday. I tend to ignore Black Friday. You can get better deals at other times during the year.
I'm still smarting over the vacation issue in regards to crazy workplace. I'm going to have to put my foot down next year with BYT and BB, and insist on taking two weeks in a row. And if they have an issue with it - I'll have them discuss it with my union rep.
