I 'd agree that's most likely why. It's very much the Pygmalion story - where the creator is usurped by the creation. Various takes on it. And always with an older man taking on a younger, female, protegee and falling in love with her - until she surpasses him, and he commits suicide.
Kind of a commentary on the gender imbalance and politics in Hollywood - which may be part of the appeal? I know it's why Streisand made it.
If I were to rewatch any of them? I'd watch the Garland and Gaga versions. But that's just me?
