Idkr? I also don't know if scammed - why the writer didn't check it out more closely? She was advised by friends too - per the comments. Apparently some people knew who the writer was. (I googled to see if anyone else had done it, and found the idiotic staff writer for the New Yorker, which I found more shocking. I did not find the person who did it to Scalzi.) I remember when I self-published or non-traditionally published my novel - and all the sites promising to provide "reviews" or "blurbs"? I checked them out and thought, scam! It's also why I don't read books based on what other writers think of them. There's no guarantee the writer read the book, that the blurb or quote is true or if true, means something else entirely in context. I ignore the marketing and determine if I want to read it - based on what's on the back cover, and a synopsis or blurb, and a sample. I also go by recs from folks I know or who are on DW.
