I do think that is part of it. On some level I do believe that while we say we want to see strong women it is hard to leave aside the assumptions our culture has ingrained in us and not judge traits in women negatively that we might see as positive in a man.
On the other hand vulnerability is our entry point to understanding characters - we all know pain after all. To lose that is to render a character unknowable. I think ME was trying to play with some of those assumptions about power and invulnerability, and whether need is a weakness, but got all mucked up in the S7 execution.
