Seeing someone react like that to something you love is an extra special reward; as special a gift as you can get.
I was watching the film again last night, or early this morning to be honest and a couple of moments stood out to me more than usual; one where Chief Lambiase tells the story, to cheer A.J. up, of the troubled kid skipping school to read The Infinite Jest ~ I've decided I really want the story to be a true one right now ~ and also; for very similar reasons, the way the true author of Late Bloomer is portrayed as a college friend of Amelia's at the wedding reception.
It reminds me of a quote, I have no idea who by, which goes something like 'the stories we tell ourselves are often more the truth than the reality. I love how that reminds me of one of my favourite Terry Pratchett lines; from Granny Weatherwax in Wyrd Sisters, "Things that look like things often look realler than the things. Well known fact, but I don't hold with encouraging it."
It's also interesting the different things people see in the same story. For me the main character of the book IS Island Books itself; possibly why I love the Chief's Choice scene so much as well, and the way the stories of the characters weave around this tiny little place and magic it weaves around them, from A.J. through Maya's mother to Maya & Amelia; reaching even Ismay.
It's an irony that the only one who seems to miss out on the magic is the Island's famous published author.
I regret that we probably won't get to read the stories that Maya Tamurlane Fikry will write, but I do believe that somewhere, in some far off universe, someone is reading those stories.
