Read on DW correspondence that someone at a writer's group advised that men don't cry, and a male character crying was unbelievable.

I thought..."Some people need to spend some time watching the Olympics. Because a lot of men are crying during the Olympics." Also I've seen my brother and father cry. Everyone cries. It's kind of necessary. Some people need to be smacked upside the head.

Watching the balance beam.

Laurie Hernandez - the commentator and former Olympic Gold Medalist - when asked what the hardest apparatus were - she said: "It's hard to say? But the two that get the most falls are the balance beam and the Impossible (Uneven) Bars."

Suni Lee fell on the balance beam, making me gasp and feel devastated for her, and after she got off...Simone came up, hugged her after she returned and talked to her about it. Said it was a good routine, but sometimes things go awry. I love Simone so much.

These are not easy apparatus.

I can't believe that in 2024 someone would still make that sort of ridiculous comment about crying. Granted the type of crying might be different, but seriously?

This thing about men not crying annoyed me so much that I did a poll about it. Turns out, it's only people who haven't seen a man cry in real life don't think they should do it in fics.

Some people have this odd tendency to think if it lies outside their experience in any way - it doesn't exist. Or if you can't experience it yourself - you won't understand or can't imagine or feel empathy for it - because they can't?

It's annoying. And doesn't speak highly of their emotional capacity to feel empathy for others.
