This sounds really similar to my own experience and my family's. I honestly can't tell the difference between ring tones either. I can't tell whose phone is ringing most of the time or where it is coming from.
Also had piano lessons - and the difficulty there was mainly hand-eye coordination. I could play the keys with one hand, and maybe the other, but not the feet at the same time. Drove the teacher crazy - until she begged my mother for both our sakes to stop them. I could sight read, but I couldn't really pick up on whether it was in tune or not.
