I finished it today and without spoiling you? It's a satisfactory ending that ties up all the stories, and themes in a satisfying manner. Not a happy ending per se, just a satisfying one - which is actually better than a happy ending?
Nah, it would not work as live action at all. The humans interacting with a completely alien (to them) planet is really hard to replicate in live action.
What I love about it - is the planet isn't necessarily hostile, it just adapts and works to sustain itself and life. Very well done take on ecological sustainability and the ethical challenges within it.
It did take me a while to get through it - because it's very creepy in places. I'd say the last three episodes aren't quite as creepy as the first five. So you're almost past the really creepy bits.
