* Deadline article on the Buffy Reboot and who is involved

Whedon isn't.

" Beyond the pilot order, I hear the reboot is starting a writers room soon, a sign that Hulu and the studios have high expectations for the project going to series. It is unclear yet whether other original Buffy cast members would return; that is considered likely.

Described as the next chapter in the Buffyverse, the new incarnation is executive produced by Gellar, Zhao via her Book of Shadows banner, Nora and Lilla Zuckerman as well as the original series’ executive producers Gail Berman of the Jackal Group and Fran Kuzui & Kaz Kuzui via Suite B. Also executive producing the pilot is Dolly Parton whose company Sandollar was producer on the original.

Buffy creator Joss Whedon, who also wrote the 1992 movie the series was based on, has no involvement in the reboot. He has not worked in Hollywood in any official capacity since facing a slew of misconduct allegations in 2021.

The hope is for the Buffy pilot to shoot in Los Angeles where the original was filmed. If the pilot goes to series, it would be the third in the franchise, following mothership Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which aired on the WB for five seasons from 1997-2001 before dramatically moving to UPN for two more, and spinoff Angel, which ran on the WB for five seasons (1999-2004).

* Casting News on Buffy Reboot via CBR

Per the initial reports, the new slayer is a "cerebral 16-year-old named Nova, who is very smart and a bit of a loner." The description is reminiscent of the original series' Willow, who wasn't very popular and was only friends with Xander before they formed their "Scooby" gang.

Nova, whose name is likely to change, will also have several close friends. The new Scooby Gang will include "Hugo, an out-and-proud nerd who comes from money, and Gracie, a young expert on vampires who’s an acolyte of Gellar’s Buffy." Casting is currently underway for the three characters, but neither Hulu nor 20th Television has confirmed the report.

So far, the only actor attached to the project is Gellar, who will work with two-time Oscar-winning filmmaker Chloé Zhao as director, and Poker Face's Nora and Zila Zuckerman as writers, showrunners, and executive producers, alongside longtime producers Gail Berman, Fran Kuzui, Kaz Kuzui, and Dolly Parton.

Gellar previously confirmed that the original cast is aware of the reboot since she has remained close to many co-stars. Aside from her comments, other actors showed an interest in the sequel series. Charisma Carpenter, who played Cordelia in the original series and the spin-off series Angel, told Collider recently she hopes she'll return.

David Boreanaz, who played Angel, explained his interest in returning to the Buffyverse ahead of the reboot news, and James Marsters, who played Spike, also seemed interested, but didn't want to reveal anything ahead of time. Seth Green, who played Oz, as well as Juliet Landau, who played the vampire Drusilla, also shared an interest in the sequel series."

* New Details on Buffy Revival Main Roles

An apparent casting call for young faces to star in the upcoming “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” semi-reboot on Hulu has gone out.

Scooper DanielRPK appears to have obtained a copy of the casting call and confirms rumors that star Sarah Michelle Gellar’s role as Buffy Summers will be taking on a mentor-type role this time.

The main slayer here will be Nova, a teenager whom Buffy will take on as a trainee and is described as a “determined and fearless high school vampire hunter”.

The casting call is looking for actual teens or actors in their twenties for all teenage roles. Ethnicity for all characters is open.

Other characters include Nova’s dedicated photojournalist father Abe, the wealthy and awkwardly nerdy Hugo, Nova’s best friend and lore-loving Gracie, the confident jock Cole, and the school librarian Mr. Burke who becomes a vampire at some point.

Also being cast is a key supporting role named Mia dubbed a ‘social media-obsessed student’ who gets caught up in the chaos. It’s not clear if any other cast members from the original show would return.

The series is being directed by Oscar winner Chloé Zhao along with having “Poker Face” co-showrunners Nora & Lilla Zuckerman as writers, and longtime television executive Gail Berman as producer.
