It had to do with contractural issues why it's set in such an odd way. He's not allowed to show any BtVS characters (and I gather Sunnydale was in some way also considered part of the BtVS license) so he had to place it somewhere else. But the intention according to the writer is that it takes place in Season 6. A daytrip to LA (not mentioned in BtVS) is just regular artistic license. I mean the BtVS/AtS crossover novel "Cursed" also takes place during Season 6 with Spike making a trip to LA. I don't think a trip to LA has to be established within the show. And, I suppose, it could be argued that Spike was aware of the bar before NFA or he wouldn't have known to go there for a poetry reading Was it the greatest thing I've ever read-no-but we have a number of the graphic novels at work and this is much, much better IMO. The artwork is certainly of a much higher quality.
