Life is such a huge struggle, it is comforting to see that struggle played out in fiction, to see someone with some of the same delimmas as us work through them and try to overcome them. And in life we have to do this over and over and over, so it's great to see an artist like Whedon do the same. Maybe it's why Whedon's so good with television--his most interesting characters fail repeatedly, which drives many viewers crazy. Angel has to learn the same lesson over and over, Buffy overcomes so much yet falls into depression when her mother dies, Spike--well, nobody tries harder or fails more spectacularly than Spike. He lives his life to the fullest, always open, always fearless.
Maybe soap operas have that in common--they are all about people's emotions, their emotional life.
