I like action shows as well, but require balance right now. Have one too many violent action shows and may have gotten burnt out.

To be honest, I think it's how much I identify with a character or plot-thread that attracts me to a show. Veronica Mars is almost too young for me right now - I like aspects of it, but may be past the high school motif, its about a high school student, and well, I'm 38 and can barely remember high school. But fifteen years ago? Would have been my favorite show. Same thing with the L Word, 15 years ago, would have bored me, couldn't identify, now I do. (I know this because there was a similar show on back then called Thirty-something). The L Word is about 30 and 40 something women struggling to make ends meet and trying to deal with the curve balls life has lent them. It feels very real to me, because I know people like this and have seen these situations. I get it. Same thing with Star Gate and BattleStar Galatica. I've tried Star Gate and it is too episodic and too plot driven for my taste, I think, or maybe the characters just don't quite hit me? But 15 years ago, I would have loved it just as I loved the X-men and Batman and Superman and Xena. While now, BSG's mythos, universe, characters, and plots hit me where I live and deal with some of the same issues and fears I'm struggling with.

So for me, what I like has a heck of lot to do with where I am in my life, what I'm going through, and what I've experienced. If that makes sense?
