I think it's really the medium shift on top of the story becoming more OTT. And I'm not saying that people don't understand comics. It's just simply true that seeing SMG as Buffy is not the same as seeing Jeanty drawing Buffy--and that's a huge stumbling block. That coupled with the OTT moments means the story feels so clearly different and even moments that are good, because they're different, have this tendency to be rejected.
