Maybe it is all about cultural differences. There's a saying this side of the Pond that isn't untrue that American Sci-Fi is all About the Main Character's Daddy Issues - and that tends towards Protagonist Privilege even when its all about a female protagonist and her Daddy Issues - and our Sci-Fi isn't.
