Still on jury duty. They decided the first portion of the case without me; the other alternate and I, were sequestered in a separate courtroom yesterday afternoon while the other six jurors deliberated. Then we were brought back into the courtroom to hear the verdict and because the verdict ruled in favor of the plaintiff, the trial is heading towards part II, damages. Part II will apparently take much longer than part one, which consisted of one witness, the plaintiff. Part II is consisting of well, more than one witness. It's a personal injury case - a really lame-ass personal injury case a la Judge Judy, but I'm not a decision maker here, I just show up, listen, and try not to say anything that will influence anyone. Not as easy as it looks. In fact may be one of the hardest things I've done, keeping my opinion to myself. At any rate, we were called back today, spent about an hour waiting around while the Judge and Lawyers talked, then the court officer came back into the room and said:"Got good news and bad news - the good news, you can go home. The bad news, you have to come back on Monday. They are afraid that if they start the trial today and send us home it will break up the continuity of the story, so it would be better if we start bright and early on Monday. But hey, we get credit for today and do not have to go back to work. So, I went to the movies and saw The Devil Wears Prada for seven bucks, yes it is sad that the cheap maintainee show is now seven bucks as opposed to five. Reason number 5005 for leaving NYC forewith. And hey, I get to go back and watch the trial on Monday. It's the oddest experience being an alternate. You are being paid by the State to basically do nothing but sit there, keep your mouth shut on the case, and watch.
On The Devil Wears Prada? Was much better than I expected. I did laugh. Great send-up of the hipster NYC lifestyle and the fashion biz. Also I have worked for people like Miranda Priestly and Meryl Streep has every tic of that character pitch perfect. The movie is a tad on the long side, I checked my watch three times. And there are a couple of cliche ridden bits that made my eyes roll, but every scene with Meryl or the office is priceless. In some ways I enjoyed Superman Returns more and found it less predictable, which is odd. Both are about power and glory and how we all want it and what price it exacts from us. I'm not a fan of high fashion and find magazines like Vogue, which the mag in this story is based on, to be silly doorstops, not worth the glossy paper they are printed on. So there were certain scenes in this film that made me laugh with glee, which a follower and lover of fashion may not find amusing in quite the same way. The movie to give it credit underlines the point that of all the things on earth we should worry about, fashion probably ranks somewhere near the bottom.

I added St. Elsewhere, Hill Street Blues, and Moonlighting. And yes, this is scarey, since there are more TV shows I've seen that are not *cough* on this list.
