Beautiful review of a wonderful film. I thought of Buffy also, not just for the self-sacrifice but a tiny detail--the blood dripping on to the pattern. But that of course also echoed the ending of S5, as you so rightly say.
I was struck too that the historical context was so suitable for the story, because we all knew that the victory of the resistance would be limited and that ultimately Franco would win, but also that he would eventually die and all his works be forgotten, like the Captain.
The actors were incredible, every one. Rob will tell you that the one who played the Faun also played the demon in OMWF! He has more details, and I'm sure he'll see this.
However, I thought Grave of the Butterflies was pretty dark, and in a similar way, esp. the ending. Howl's Castle was more upbeat, you're right.
