Nice to see I'm not the only one. It's described as a cult classic - and has been raved about online. I think I know why - rarhirah below explains it perfectly in one statement: "it's a love letter to a particular kind of college experience" - yep. That's how it got published and that's why some folks adore it so much. If you identify with that experience - you may love it. I went to a college like that and did identify at times, but my college experience was more multifaceted and interesting than this was - and while it occurred to me to write about it, I figured, nah, just bore people silly. LOL!
Anyhow - the publishing industry recruits people from colleges such as the one described in Dean's novel who share that experience. So that's probably how she got published. Getting published does not mean you are a good writer necessarily, just that some editor out there liked what you wrote. So much of it is subjective and just pure luck.
