I really need to rewatch The Wire soon. Some of the scenes you mention only sound vaguely familiar. :( But yeah, Herc's betrayal of Bubbles and him getting his revenge is a small piece of satisfaction in a rather bleak season... and McNulty and Bodie bonding just works beautifully. Two old (well, by some standards) soldiers in a war being passed on to the next generation.
And yeah, those school scenes are incredibly frustrating. I'm a firm believer that literary classics are (for the most part) classics because they still have something to say, but you have to get into why they do or you'll just turn people off completely. Last of the Mohicans? Really? But hey, measuring something's future usefulness is hard, much easier to test for something useless that can be easily quantified...
I think I've memorized the theme music now. ;-)
It's a great song, isn't it? This live version by Tom Waits himself is one of my favourite takes on it. "The Lord is a very, very... busy man!"
(One thing though - 10-13 episodes per season has been standard for HBO for a while now, it's not necessarily a British idea. The Sopranos could only get a 21-episode last season by breaking it up into two seasons...)
