Not sure who this is...

At any rate - yes, there are several restaurants around NYC. I belong to a Celiac Meetup Group that does a wonderful job of finding them. Haven't been to Rissoteria yet - which is a out of my way and a pain to find, not to mention packed a lot of the time - not to mention pricey from what I've heard..

But Pete's Gourmet Diner up on 84th and Third Avenue is great. You can get gluten-free pancakes, a gluten free Reuben sandwich, gluten free past, and gluten-free deserts.

Another good place is Chipolte - where you can get a bowl with all the fillings, not bread - called Burrito Bowl. It's the place I go to near Penn Station. And salad's work to some extent. (I don't have to worry as much about the drops of gluten oil that celiacs do, thank heaven. So can handle the salad bar without too much headache.) Pret Manger is great as well but no longer nearby unfortunately.

At home? I have a health food store nearby where I buy all the gluten-free items, it's no Whole Foods or Trader Joes, it's Park Natural and a tad on the pricey side. Also doesn't have the fresh baked gluten-free items, but it has other things like gluten-free frozen waffles.

It is easier for me living in the city. But it is not simple. The problem is again eating out with, socializing with, and going to work with people who are NOT gluten-intolerant, which is everyone. I adopt the attitude of - look I can't eat that - so I can't go to a place that serves only wheat pizza or KFC or places like that. If you want me to come - we have to go somewhere else. Or I'll just make other plans. Usually I eat before going to parties or people's houses or make it clear what I can't eat. At work - I say no thank you and if pressed explain it to them. They forget. I explain again. It's really not that different from being a diabetic or lactose intolerant.

Unfortunately my work place is into food - it's very weird. When I wasn't gluten-intolerant never got free food at work or very seldom, now that I am, all the bloody time!

People who are not gluten-intolerant or gluten sensitive can't understand what it is like. And people who work at home or don't have to work in a work place that is into food - like donuts every Friday, a cake every week, etc...also don't get that issue. And of course everybody relates to food differently. I have a friend who eats to live, she hates eating and is known to go a whole day without doing so. Food has relatively little importance to her. I - on the other hand - adore food. Love to cook it, eat it, and the more varieties the better - but my body doesn't and sooner or later you have to start listening to the body.
