Well, I've never read Time Traveler's Wife but can well imagine those scenarios arising. Why no one has focused on them before in a tv series I'm not sure. Quantum Leap came close once. The one book that did focus on what was going with the spouse and perhaps the best time traveling novel I've read is one by Octavia Butler entitled "Kindred" - it's a bit gut-wrenching though and unlike most time travel yarns, the traveler is a woman - a black woman - who has been pulled back to a specific period in her ancestory's past, a period she has no interest in visiting, and each visit physically hurts her and hurts her husband. It's told in first person and even though I read it four years ago, haunts me to this day. So - I don't think they are new ideas.
