It's worth keeping in mind the people raving about Homeland are the same ones who raved about The Wire and I suspect love it for the same reasons.
You REALLY have to be in the right mood/frame of mind for both. Both are violent, intense, and dark. Tightly written. With dialogue you have to follow really closely. I could not watch the Wire right now. And it took me a while to get in the right frame of mind for it. It wasn't until the last three episodes of S1 that it really took off.

Dexter...from what I understand it depends on how people related to the whole religion storyline and Deb storyline. Most of the people who hated S6 seem to like the Deb storyline well enough, but hated certain plot twists. The fact they hated S5 as well...possibly means I'll agree with them, since I disliked S5. (My least favorite seasons were S3 and S5, also got bogged down in S1...and S2. S4 was quite good though.)
